Discover Dogana da Mar in Venice

Overview

Dogana da Mar, situated at the edge of the Dorsoduro Quarter in Venice, is an architectural marvel with a fascinating history. Originally built as a customs house between 1678 and 1682, this triangular structure resembles a ship’s bow and proudly overlooks St. Mark's Basin. Its façade is defined by twenty grand gates, and the interior includes nine expansive halls that showcase a variety of art forms. The building's crowning glory is its stunning watchtower, adorned with allegorical figures that symbolize strength and fortune. Although the structure has undergone several renovations, including a notable restoration in 2009, elements of its original charm have been preserved, allowing visitors to appreciate its historical significance. Today, Dogana da Mar is home to the Punta della Dogana Art Museum, featuring a remarkable collection of contemporary art from the renowned Pinault Collection and hosting various temporary exhibitions.

The 270-degree views from this spot are absolutely stunning. While not everyone may appreciate the contemporary art collection curated by François Pinault, it's worth checking out. After you pass by the former 17th-century customs building, now the contemporary art museum, you'll arrive at the end of Fondamenta Salute. Here, you can take in the expansive view of the San Marco basin. It's a relatively quiet spot despite the boat traffic around, which is always entertaining to watch. I suggest sitting on the warm stone quay, letting your legs dangle over the water, and soaking in the atmosphere. People are constantly moving behind you, as this spot is popular for selfies with St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace. Visiting at sunrise is a must to see the magical pink hues of the Doge’s Palace, and it's just as enchanting after dark when the city transforms.

This place is excellent! It's away from the 'rush of tourists' and boasts lovely architecture. The stunning views across the canal towards Venice are the main attraction, and the beauty is absolutely worth the walk to reach it.

For us, this was the highlight of the 2024 Biennale. The exhibition was truly impressive in a minimalistic venue.

The architecture is lovely, and the building is very well-kept. It seems to be used for events and exhibitions. There might not be a lot to see, but it’s definitely worth a visit. If you're in Padua, check it out; they might have an exhibition to view or something interesting happening.

The Pinault Collection has transformed the former customs warehouses into expansive contemporary art exhibition spaces. Don't miss the charming little café there. The 'punta,' or point, at the end of the grand Canal offers another spectacular view of the Doge’s Palace and San Giorgio, which is a must-see.
