Discover Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo

Overview

The Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is a historic seafood market that has captivated visitors for centuries. Originally established in the 16th century to supply fresh fish to Edo Castle, it has evolved into the world's largest wholesale seafood market, renowned for its daily handling of over 2,000 tons of fish and seafood. With more than 400 varieties of seafood processed annually, the market's bustling inner sector is known for its famous tuna auctions held every morning from 5:30 am to 9 am. Though primarily a working market, it has garnered popularity among tourists, drawn by the lively atmosphere, authentic local culture, and a delightful array of retail stores and restaurants in the outer market area. While access to the inner market is now restricted to preserve operations, visitors can still experience the charm of the outer market, open after 9 am, where they can enjoy the freshest seafood and local delicacies, all in a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of vendors and shoppers alike.

Tsukiji Outer Market is an enormous market. It was exciting to explore various shops, offering an incredible selection of foods, meats, desserts, and candies! You can easily spend the whole day discovering everything this market has to offer. I highly recommend it if you're in Tokyo!

Tsukiji Outer Market was quite crowded, even in the off-peak season. Prices tended to be on the higher side, aimed mostly at tourist visitors. The inner fish market is no longer there. However, it's a great place to sample a variety of Japanese cuisine and street food all in one location, which is a significant positive.

What a lively place! Visiting the market was such a joy. Everyone working there was incredibly nice. We sampled various dishes, including massive raw oysters, fresh tuna, and omelets on sticks. Everything was fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend a visit!

While it's a fun experience, it's not quite the same since the fish market's closure. There are still many vendors and a variety of new food options. The seafood remains fresh, though it might be a bit pricey at some stalls. Overall, it's a great place to visit.

It's clearly a tourist spot; knowing that beforehand helps. It’s a place you should visit at least once, whether you choose to eat or not is up to you. Just don't be shocked by the prices! The food is decent quality, but you'll pay restaurant prices for street food.
