Shinjuku Gyoen: A Tranquil Retreat in the Heart of Tokyo

Overview

Shinjuku Gyoen is a remarkable public park located in Tokyo, originally established as the garden for a feudal lord's estate during the Edo Era. Completed in 1906, it spans 144 acres and is considered one of the most scenic parks in the city. The park is divided into three distinct styles: the French Formal Garden, an English Landscape Garden, and a traditional Japanese Garden. Visitors can enjoy serene landscapes featuring a picturesque pond, elegant bridges, and a charming tea house nestled among lush greenery. With around 20,000 trees, including a breathtaking display of cherry blossoms from its 1,500 cherry trees in spring, it is renowned as a prime cherry blossom viewing spot. The park also boasts seasonal blooms of vibrant chrysanthemums and features carefully curated flower and rock gardens. Alongside its natural beauty, Shinjuku Gyoen offers numerous amenities, including an art gallery, a restaurant, and various walking paths, making it a perfect escape from the urban hustle. Access points include the Shinjuku Gate, Okido Gate, and Sendagaya Gate.

A beautiful park in the heart of Tokyo. A cheap delight (500 yen per adult as of February 2025), it's well worth visiting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city just outside. Picturesque views await around every corner, with plenty of spots to relax and take a break. Although we weren't there during cherry blossom season, it is a beautiful place even in winter as shown by the attached images. The garden is immaculately clean and includes toilet facilities.

I visited the garden on 22/2 and was delighted to see the cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. Some cherry blossoms were in full bloom. I adore Japanese gardens the most. However, the rose garden didn’t have flowers as I had expected. The garden is vast and beautiful, featuring many trees, plants, and flowers, plus there is a botanical garden and cafe inside.

Adult Tickets: 500¥ kids under 16 are free. Such a lovely park in any season. We could see the cherry blossom trees. They have restrooms and a charming little coffee/ice cream/snack bar. Highly recommend for a picnic and a leisurely stroll.

We visited in winter, so the grass was yellow instead of green but surprisingly soft. I stayed on it. It felt very comfortable to the touch. The entire garden was a very beautiful and clean park. Everything is clean in this country 😅. I had a deeply relaxing walk through this garden. The Japanese garden was well organized and gave me a very restful feeling.

A beautiful garden to stroll around, learn about plants and trees, and to relax. The garden closes at 4 pm. Entrance fees for adults are ¥500. Toilets, benches, and a restaurant are available in the garden. You can bring your own food and please remember to take your trash back. I spent about 1.5 hours there.
