Explore the Mori Art Museum: A Contemporary Art Destination in Tokyo

Overview

Perched on the 53rd floor of the iconic Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, the Mori Art Museum is a beacon of contemporary art in Tokyo. Founded by visionary real estate developer Minoru Mori, the museum offers an immersive experience through its remarkable architecture designed by Richard Gluckman. Entry is secured through a dramatic 30-meter high lobby, and a unique translucent glass 'Museum Cone' allows access from all directions. The striking structure of the tower features a concrete elevator funnel and a winding staircase, providing breathtaking views of the Japanese Garden below. The museum does not house a permanent collection; instead, it showcases rotating exhibitions from some of the world’s leading contemporary artists, including luminaries like Ai Weiwei and Andy Warhol. Visitors can also enjoy an observation deck on the 52nd floor for panoramic views of the vibrant cityscape, making the Mori Art Museum a must-visit cultural highlight for art enthusiasts.

I visited the exhibit 'machine love' and was incredibly impressed. The size was perfect, with amazing artists pushing contemporary art. I almost didn't go, but I'm so glad I did. It makes me believe their other shows are just as well curated and executed. There's also a fantastic smaller exhibit about underground Japan in the 60s. It’s truly insightful and one of a kind.

This was absolutely one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had at an art museum. The current exhibit of Louise Bourgeois's work was stunning! It was well curated, utilizing various media to tell the artist's life story. We had only three days in Tokyo, but the three hours spent in the museum and the observation hall with a panoramic view of the city were well worth it. The museum is located on the 52nd floor of a building with various shops, offices, and restaurants. It's also conveniently right outside the subway.

I went to see the Louise Bourgeois exhibit, and it was one of the best I've seen in a long time. I was truly awestruck by the uniqueness and story of the artist. The exhibition space did a great job curating the pieces. Highly recommended! You should see the exhibit in person, as pictures don't do justice to the pieces. You won't be disappointed.
