Rabin Square: A Historic Landmark in Tel Aviv

Overview

Rabin Square, located in the heart of Tel Aviv, stands as a prominent public space that has hosted numerous parades, political rallies, and demonstrations over the years. Originally named Kings of Israel Square, the square was renamed in memory of Yitzhak Rabin, the former Prime Minister of Israel, following his tragic assassination in 1995. Designed in 1964, it is nestled among significant landmarks, including the City Hall. The square features a poignant memorial sculpture dedicated to Holocaust victims, crafted by the renowned Israeli artist Yigal Tumarkin. Historically, the area served as a venue for exhibitions of Israeli military might on Independence Day until the 90s. Today, it remains a place of reflection, especially marked by the memorial honoring Rabin, who was assassinated during a peace rally here. Engravings of his last speech in Hebrew, English, and Arabic can be found leading up to City Hall, reminding visitors of the challenges faced in preserving democracy and peace.

Rabin Square, named after the late Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated nearby, is complemented by the Tel Aviv municipality building. While it may not be as grand as Venice's St. Mark's Square or London's Trafalgar Square, it still offers a charming atmosphere. A stroll down Gordon Street towards the beach reveals the natural artistry of the trees. This spacious square in central Tel Aviv in front of City Hall hosts various celebrations and protests, with many excellent restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and bars in the vicinity.

Rabin Square, which was formerly known as Israel's Kings Square, honors the late PM Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated here. Above the square stands the Tel Aviv municipality building. While it may not offer many attractions aside from the monument itself, on weekends, the square transforms into a lovely picnic spot for families.

At first glance, Rabin Square may appear unremarkable, but it beautifully merges political importance with daily life. Enjoy a coffee from one of the surrounding cafes and, when the weather is nice, take a seat by the pool. If you’re lucky enough to catch a political rally during your visit, it'll only add to the experience.

This expansive square situated in the heart of Tel Aviv, directly in front of the City Hall, serves as a venue for celebrations and protests. Additionally, it has recently become the site for large Covid testing tents.
