Skogskyrkogården, or the Woodland Cemetery, is an architectural marvel located in Stockholm. Designed by famed architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz between 1917 and 1920, this serene cemetery blends nature and artistry, making it a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Visitors can explore various notable structures, including the elegant Woodland Chapel and the contemporary New Crematorium. The Chapel of Resurrection, adorned with stunning bronze reliefs, and the thoughtfully designed Woodland Crematorium with its three chapels, invite moments of reflection. Guests can also relax in the meditation grove known as Almhöjden, enjoy guided tours in English and Swedish, and visit the on-site café for refreshments. Skogskyrkogården is a peaceful place to honor and remember, making it a must-see in Stockholm.

We took the suburban train to explore this UNESCO Heritage cemetery, which is expansive and features lovely woodlands and a beautiful chapel. It’s a tranquil place worth visiting.

My visit to this cemetery in February 2022 was to pay respects to Greta Garbo. I knew it was large, but I was truly amazed by its vastness. It is a serene oasis of calm and tranquility. It takes about 40 minutes from central Stockholm by train, and upon arrival, it's a short walk to the entrance. I spent my entire morning enjoying the quiet and the unique architecture throughout, although winter paths can be icy, so one must tread carefully. I loved it and would certainly return to this sacred ground.

This cemetery is beautifully landscaped, offering extensive opportunities for exploration and admiring diverse architecture. The audio guide provided is helpful, and there's a visitor center, although it was closed during my visit. There are plenty of information boards at the entrance. Highly recommend visiting while in Stockholm as it’s very near the T-bana.

This is the largest cemetery I've ever explored—you'll need at least two hours! I even saw a squirrel devour an entire pinecone in seconds, which was adorable amid the many pinecones littering the ground. Finding a toilet can be challenging due to the cemetery's vastness.
