Overview

Originally known as the Fine Art Museum when it opened in 1996, the Singapore Art Museum stands as a beacon of contemporary artistry within Singapore's Art and Heritage District. This museum boasts an impressive array of Singaporean, Southeast Asian, and East Asian contemporary art, featuring both established and emerging artists. With exhibitions that rotate regularly, visitors are invited to experience fresh and innovative works in painting, sculpture, installations, and multimedia art. Among its highlights is a breathtaking 7-meter Swarovski crystal chandelier that graces the entrance hall. Housed in the beautifully restored St. Joseph's Institution—a historic 140-year-old mission school recognized as a national monument—guests can also appreciate the building's preserved architectural features. The museum is complemented by five cafes and restaurants, making it a perfect destination for art lovers and cultural explorers alike.

This art museum houses fascinating masterpieces by Claude Monet and other Impressionists. I was pleasantly surprised to see pieces on loan from prestigious European galleries like d'Orsay. During my visit in March 2018, there was a special exhibition featuring works from Monet, Renoir, and Juan Luna. The Neoclassical building is stunning, though it may feel a bit large for the collection. Spending an hour here is sufficient to appreciate the most notable artworks.

If you live in Singapore, visiting this National Museum is a must. It showcases the history of Singapore through various exhibitions, historic objects, and audio clips. The museum begins with the land's history through portraits and clips. Art lovers should not miss Level 1 for its engaging exhibits. Level 2 offers a forest journey that's enjoyable for families and friends, while kids will love the 3D experiences. There's also a new Basement Level dedicated to Polaroid exhibitions that's great for science enthusiasts. Overall, it was a wonderful experience!

Currently, the main museum is closed until around the end of 2018, but there's a nearby space hosting temporary exhibitions. During my visit, the setup catered to children and families, but the art is suitable for all ages.
