Visit Fort Siloso: A Glimpse into Military History in Singapore

Overview

Fort Siloso stands as a remarkable testament to military engineering and history in Singapore. This former coastal artillery battery, one of twelve constructed to form 'Fortress Singapore', is the last remaining structure of its kind. Built between 1874 and 1878, Fort Siloso was designed to protect Singapore's strategic port, especially after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Visitors can explore restored gun posts, deep tunnels, and captivating exhibits that recount the fort's significant role during World War II, including its use as a POW camp by the Japanese. Today, the fort serves as a military museum, offering interactive experiences that allow guests to engage with the past through guided tram tours and a wealth of historical artifacts.

This place is really fascinating. I recommend taking the free Skywalk first; the exhibitions are enjoyable as you move downwards instead of upwards. Many of the exhibits will become interactive when you approach them, providing insights in English. It's a fantastic spot for history enthusiasts with well-marked information throughout.

This location truly captivated me. While many flock to the 'modern entertainment' experiences such as the luge runs and theme parks, this place offers a quiet and historical charm. Exploring the heritage trail is a great way to see gun batteries, ancient fort buildings, and museums. You can enjoy breathtaking views by taking the Cablecar, followed by a lift to the Skywalk that leads to the fort and heritage trail.

This site is not very crowded, appealing to both local visitors and tourists. You can take a pleasant walk, enjoy the serenity, and capture photos without anyone else in them while learning about the historical context. It's an excellent way to spend 1-2 hours, and best of all, it's free.

This is one of my favorite spots in Sentosa. You can easily reach it by taking a bus from the train station, which runs frequently. Entry is free, allowing you to stroll and enjoy both the nature and the rich history of the area.

I visited Fort Siloso on Sentosa Island and was amazed by the variety it offers as a complimentary attraction. It is Singapore’s only preserved coastal fort, and exploring the WWII-era bunkers, gun batteries, and interactive displays gave me a deep sense of history. The atmosphere was refreshing, especially on the Fort Siloso Skywalk, where I enjoyed panoramic views of Sentosa’s lush surroundings. It's a serene place that beautifully blends history with nature, perfect for spending a few hours.
