A major highlight is the playful sea lions – their lively behavior and vocalizations provide endless entertainment. The views from the deck are breathtaking, showcasing a clear view of Alcatraz Prison across the bay.
Finding parking can be tricky, as the nearby public lots tend to be quite full. It can take around 15 minutes to secure a parking spot after collecting the parking card at the entrance, which can be frustrating. However, the overall experience at Pier 39 compensates for these minor inconveniences.
Traffic in the area is typical of San Francisco, but manageable. The restrooms are adequate, though not exceptional. All in all, Pier 39 is a fantastic spot for tourists, especially families, offering scenic views, vibrant attractions, and a fun atmosphere.
Visiting Pier 39 on a Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. turned out to be a delightful experience.
The area wasn’t overly busy, which made exploring the surroundings much more enjoyable.
Seeing the famous sea lions was my main goal, and they did not disappoint! There were quite a few of them resting and playing on the floating docks, and their antics were mesmerizing to watch.
The pier is equipped with plenty of benches near the sea lion viewing area, allowing visitors to relax and take in the view at their leisure. It’s a lovely spot to observe these fascinating creatures while savoring the fresh sea breeze.
Beyond the sea lions, Pier 39 has a lively ambiance with a wide variety of shops and restaurants to discover.
From unique souvenir shops to casual dining, there’s something to suit every taste.
Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a full meal, the options are diverse.

It’s an amazing destination for families, couples, or solo travelers in search of a memorable experience.
Even on a rainy day, Pier 39 was incredibly fun! So many people of different backgrounds were out enjoying the rain. The food, gift shops, sea lions, and Alcatraz are the biggest attractions here. It’s great for everyone, regardless of age. Ramps and elevators are available for those who require assistance. There’s a parking garage right across from the entrance. Just a heads up: the first gift shop you encounter tends to have higher prices and can be quite crowded with visitors who stop immediately upon entry. We bought plastic rain jackets for $7.99 each, but you can find them for $4.99 in the boardwalk shops. T-shirts and sweatshirts were also priced higher at the front than they were further in. Be sure to try Trish’s mini donuts shop! They’re hot and freshly made, packed with love in every bite! This is a worthwhile stop when touring the San Francisco area, offering great views of the bay, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate.
We had an absolutely fun time at Pier 39! This place has a bit of everything... numerous food options, from fast food to restaurants, and a wide variety of shopping. We easily spent half the day here and could have easily stayed longer. It was a fantastic time, and we will definitely be back!
Make sure to buy parking online in advance; it’s half price!
Pier 39 is even better than a zoo! The main attraction is the adorable sea lions sunbathing, completely unfazed by the crowds observing them. People gather around, laughing and cheering as the sea lions bark, play, and nap—it’s endlessly entertaining. You could easily spend hours just watching their carefree lives on the pier.
The Ferris wheel adds a special charm, enhancing the lively and unique atmosphere at this location. Pier 39 is an absolute must-visit and should be at the top of any San Francisco itinerary!
