Explore Villa Borghese: Rome’s Premier Public Park

Overview

Villa Borghese is not just a park; it is a sprawling oasis that serves as Rome's largest public landscape park, covering an impressive 148 acres. Originally established in 1605 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, this picturesque garden was designed by the esteemed landscaper Domenico Savino da Montepulciano. With its roots in geometric designs, Villa Borghese gradually embraced natural elements, creating a serene environment accentuated by an artificial lake added in the 18th century. At the heart of the park lies an Ionic Temple dedicated to the God of Healing, set on a charming island amidst the waters. The park transitioned to public ownership in 1903, opening its gates for everyone to enjoy. Highlights include the renowned Museo e Galleria Borghese housed in the former Borghese family residence, alongside the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna and the Museo Nazionale Etruscan. Discover beautiful fountains, sculptures, and the enchanting Piazza di Siena, making Villa Borghese an unmissable destination for locals and visitors alike.

Villa Borghese is a stunning park that offers a perfect escape from the bustling streets of Rome. With its lush gardens, scenic pathways, and beautiful fountains, it’s an ideal spot for a relaxing walk, a bike ride, or simply unwinding in nature. The park is also home to the Borghese Gallery, one of the city’s finest museums, showcasing masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bernini, and Raphael. Beyond the art, Villa Borghese boasts picturesque lakes, historic buildings, and panoramic viewpoints, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re looking for tranquility or inspiration, this green oasis in the heart of Rome delivers both. Highly recommended!

On our last day in Rome, we were searching for some greenery. This massive park was recommended by a server at our hotel so we checked it out. This park has a lot. They have little pedal cars you can rent, but you will have to leave your license with someone. So maybe bring a backup license in case you don't trust them with it. There are tons of trails, some food vendors, washrooms, a zoo, fountains, and plenty of greenery. If you're looking for a break from the busy streets, head up here to this beautiful park.

A highlight of Rome! Excellent way to soak up nature and get away from all the crowds. Very beautiful park with many statues, picnic spots, bars, and paths. We rented a rowboat on the lake, had coffee at two of the bars, enjoyed the street musicians, tossed a coin in the fountain--all the touristy things since we are from the USA. All without the crowds!

Beautiful park. An urban oasis from the endless traffic and crowds in the surrounding city of Rome. There isn't a lot of greenery on the streets here, so this, along with the lack of crowds, made this a great place to just take a leisurely stroll and chill.

A beautiful building with amazing statues and artwork. The architecture is stunning and each room is rich with art. The park surrounding Villa Borghese is very peaceful and this was one of my favorite parts of my trip!
