Piazza di Spagna: Rome's Iconic Spanish Square

Overview

Piazza di Spagna, or the Spanish Square, is an iconic landmark in Rome renowned for its breathtaking Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti), which elegantly ascend to the French Church located at the top. This 18th-century square has a unique irregular shape and lies at the base of the scenic Pincio Hill. A highlight of the square is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a magnificent fountain designed by the famous architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1598, featuring a quaint statue of a small boat, a tribute to the Tiber River's flooding of the same year. Surrounding the square are significant historical buildings, including the former residence of John Keats, which operates as a museum, and the Palazzo Cybo, dating back to the 15th century. Piazza di Spagna serves as a central hub connecting Rome's finest shopping streets, like Via Condotti and Via del Babuino, home to top luxury brands such as Gucci, Prada, and Valentino. Visitors should note that sitting and eating on the steps is prohibited, ensuring the preservation of this historic site.

From the piazza to the steps, the fountain, and the overall atmosphere, this is a MUST VISIT! I spent around 30 minutes strolling around, climbed to the 3rd level of the steps, and enjoyed filling my water from the fountain. The views are stunning, the ambience is fantastic, and there are great photo opportunities from every angle! 💙👏👏

This is one of Rome's most iconic symbols. It's impressive and beautiful, although it can get very crowded. I suggest visiting at night for a breathtaking view of Rome from the top.

During Christmas, the atmosphere here is amazing, filled with tourists and locals out for shopping and enjoying the festive spirit. I advise against stopping at the nearby bars and cafes if you're looking to save money, as prices are quite high in this popular area. However, if you really want a budget-friendly coffee or cappuccino, there’s a McDonald's close by that serves good hot drinks.

This square and its stairs are perfect for relaxing and taking in the scenic views, as well as capturing unique photos. Many popular brand shops are located around the area. When I visited, the fountain was undergoing renovation.
