During our recent visit to the Altar of Peace in Rome, we had the chance to explore the Museo dell'Ara Pacis, which houses the celebrated Ara Pacis Augustae. This ancient altar, commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BC to honor Emperor Augustus's victories in Gaul and Spain, beautifully embodies the themes of Roman art, peace, and prosperity. The detailed reliefs on the altar depict mythological tales and provide insight into historical events, giving visitors a unique perspective on Roman legacy.
The museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, elegantly combines modern and ancient features. Its glass structure illuminates the altar, showcasing the intricate details and creating an enchanting ambience. We appreciated how the museum allows visitors to interact with the altar in an engaging way.
For those keen on history, art, or architecture, an hour is enough to enjoy the museum and its exhibits. The informative displays and multilingual video guides enriched our understanding of the significance of the altar. The museum offers a strong educational experience, detailing the Augustan era and the peace established by Augustus.
The Museo dell'Ara Pacis is open daily from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM, with last entry at 6:30 PM. Adult admission is €14, and €8.50 for concessions. If you're visiting multiple museums, the MIC card provides entry for 12 months for just €5, which we found to be an excellent bargain.
We were thoroughly impressed by our experience and highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Rome. It is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those interested in Ancient Rome's impact!
The exhibition on Greek and Roman Theatre at the museum was highly informative and expertly organized. The upper-level museum is quite dramatic, showcasing Augustus Caesar's altar to peace within a modern building.
The museum features an impressive artifact that represents Pax Romana. While the entrance fee is high at €15 for what is a brief visit, I found the experience worthwhile despite some issues. I was followed by an older woman during my time at the museum, which detracted from my enjoyment. Additionally, I faced an attempt to overcharge me for a guidebook at the bookstore. There is room for improvement in how they handle tourism, but it's still worth a visit for history lovers.

We visited the museum on a Sunday, arriving just as it opened. There are many areas to explore, and you could spend around 30 minutes to an hour at a leisurely pace. The preservation of the artifacts is fantastic, and the lower level is pleasantly cool, perfect for relaxing on a bench. Restrooms are available on the lower floor, accessible by lift or stairs, and tickets can be purchased at the entrance.
