Discover Corcovado: The Hunchback Mountain of Rio de Janeiro

Overview

Corcovado, meaning 'hunchback' in Portuguese, is a breathtaking 2,330 ft mountain situated in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca Forest national park. Renowned for the iconic Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue that crowns its summit, Corcovado is not just a breathtaking landmark but a symbol of the city itself. Every year, over 300,000 visitors embark on a scenic 20-minute train journey via the 2.4 mile Rack Railway to reach the mountain's summit. The observation deck, accessible by elevators or a steep climb of 223 steps, offers stunning views of Rio de Janeiro, including the famous Sugarloaf Mountain and Copacabana beach. The mountain was initially named Pinaculo da Tentacao (Pinnacle of Temptation) but later renamed to reflect its distinctive shape. An area of remarkable natural beauty, Corcovado provides numerous climbing routes for experienced adventurers and presents a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable memories. Ensure you choose a clear day for your visit to take in the magnificent sights unimpeded by clouds.

Absolutely breathtaking views! There's parking available close to the entrance, just a short 10-minute walk away. The cost is R$57.00 per person plus R$5.00 for the van ride! Be cautious of people trying to exploit tourists; they can charge excessively and create unnecessary pressure.

A beautiful experience! There's truly nothing like it worldwide. It tends to be quite crowded, but it's absolutely worth it. I suggest visiting either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the rush.

I believe this place speaks for itself, but I want to help those arriving by train. If you come around 9 AM, you typically won't have a long wait, and it's less crowded during that time. Just a heads up about people in white shirts near the train station who may mislead you about long waits when there aren’t any. Just try to get there early!

The iconic statue is a true masterpiece! I was in awe! It’s a must-see when visiting Rio de Janeiro. I went to Corcovado on my first trip to Rio in 2008 (these photos are from then, so some things may have changed). I took a cab to the site, which was about an hour's ride. Upon arrival, there are stairs to reach the viewing platform, where the views are already stunning. There are small shops on the platform selling souvenirs, local ice creams, sodas, and snacks, which is refreshing after the climb in warm weather. An escalator will take you to the statue, where the views are as magnificent as the statue itself. Yes, it can get crowded, but the scenery is breathtaking.

I hiked Corcovado in March 2021. That year, there were few travelers, so I was fortunate that the place wasn’t too crowded. I started the hiking trail at Parque Lage with no entrance fee then. Just make sure to arrive before 2 PM when the entrance closes. The trail is pretty easy, taking about an hour or less, but I took my time for photos. The hike was enjoyable, with locals warmly greeting me on the way. I took all my photos myself, including selfies! Check out my IG- @lucas.fernandes
