Old-New Synagogue: A Historic Gem in Prague

Overview

The Old-New Synagogue, located in the heart of Prague, is an iconic structure with a rich history dating back to the mid-13th century. As an exceptional example of Gothic architecture, it stands as one of the oldest active synagogues in Europe. This sacred site has withstood the test of time, surviving fires and the darker days of history, including the Nazi occupation. Its intriguing name stems from local legends suggesting it was constructed atop an ancient Jewish prayer house. Visitors are advised that traditional customs apply when attending services—men must cover their heads, and there are specific seating arrangements for men and women during events. Please note that it operates independently and requires a separate entry ticket, distinct from the nearby Jewish Museum.

Visiting the New Old Synagogue in Prague was an extraordinary experience. This historical site, featuring stunning Gothic architecture, connects visitors to the Jewish heritage of Prague. The synagogue is well-maintained and exudes a peaceful and solemn atmosphere, ideal for reflection. I highly recommend making it a part of your trip; it’s a must-see landmark that offers a unique glimpse into Prague’s history.

Our trip to Prague wouldn’t have been the same without visiting at least one synagogue, and we chose the Old New Synagogue which was absolutely beautiful. As an active synagogue and the oldest one, it provides a quiet, peaceful, and ornate atmosphere with stunning vaulted stone ceilings and arches. There is a small fee to enter. You can purchase a pass to see multiple synagogues within a specific timeframe, but due to our limited time, we opted for this lovely one. Located centrally in Old Town with excellent shopping and dining options nearby, I highly recommend it if you appreciate meaningful places of worship.

Everything in this sacred place of worship is old and filled with history, from the altar down to the seats and books. It appears that the builders have maximized the number of wooden furnishings to accommodate as many worshippers as possible.

Not included in the four synagogue tour, you will need to purchase a separate ticket to enter, which seems overpriced. The interior is not particularly exciting.

This is the oldest active synagogue in all of Europe! The name may be confusing; it was considered the New Synagogue when built in the 13th century. Over time, as more synagogues emerged in the 16th century, it became known as the Old-New Synagogue! Make sure to notice the Baroque money box immediately upon entering; I’ve heard two different explanations of its purpose: it may be for tax collection or discreet donations for the synagogue. I remain unsure which, if either, is true!
