Bethlehem Chapel: A Historical Landmark in Prague

Overview

Bethlehem Chapel, located in the heart of Prague, stands as a significant historical landmark with its roots dating back to medieval times. Originally founded in 1319 by Wenceslas Kriz, this chapel has witnessed a transformation from a revered church to its current status. With a capacity to accommodate over 3,000 attendees, it is now a vibrant venue for various academic and social events, including university ceremonies and international conferences. Notably linked to the preaching of Jan Hus, the chapel is famous for its historic Czech sermons. Despite an attempted destruction by Pope in 1412, the Old Town Council preserved its essence, and restoration efforts have allowed visitors to appreciate its medieval walls and architecture. Today, Bethlehem Chapel offers not just an array of events but also holds religious services and classical music concerts. A visit here promises an enriching experience, especially for lovers of classical music looking to enjoy a captivating performance in a stunning historical setting.

A charming and beautiful location - a hidden treasure in the center of Prague! Entrance fees are affordable, under 5 euros. There is a knowledgeable male guide who speaks excellent English. Information brochures about the chapel are available in multiple languages. Definitely worth a visit!

During our visit to Prague, my husband and I explored the fascinating Bethlehem Chapel, which dates back to the Reformation and is closely linked to the remarkable figure Jan Hus. The interior photos tell a detailed story. It's worth noting that you can read the chapel's history in your own language.

A significant historical site in Prague's Old Town. This was where a large chapel from the High Middle Ages allowed for the preaching of the gospel in Czech. Jan Hus delivered sermons here, marking the beginning of the Hussite movement in Czech lands. After Hus was executed and during the Hussite Wars, the chapel remained in use until the Thirty Years War when it was taken over by the Jesuits. It fell into neglect and was slated for demolition but was rebuilt under the Communists, who considered Hus a precursor of the proletariat. The hall has been beautifully restored and there are guides and informative materials to highlight the significance of this space in the broader history of Prague and the world.

The chapel where Jan Hus preached. Its beauty lies in its simplicity, typical of reformed architecture.
