Hanging Gardens of Mumbai: A Green Sanctuary in the City

Overview

Located in South Mumbai atop Malabar Hill, the Hanging Gardens are a stunning terraced park that date back to 1880. Designed by Ulhas Ghapokar, this idyllic green space was created to safeguard the city's main reservoir from pollution. Dedicated to Pherozeshah Mehta, a prominent Parsi lawyer and political figure, the gardens feature beautifully trimmed hedges shaped like animals and provide breathtaking views of the sunset over the Arabian Sea. Visitors can enjoy various attractions, including a striking sundial clock and the charming Old Woman’s Shoe or Boot House, while vendors offer tasty snacks nearby. The Hanging Gardens also serve as a gateway to explore other attractions such as the Jain Temple and Kamala Nehru Park. Experience a moment of peace amidst the urban hustle as you unwind in this serene oasis.

The Hanging Gardens in Mumbai provides a serene escape from the city's chaos. Nestled atop Malabar Hill, this garden features stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the Marine Drive skyline, making it a perfect retreat. The beautifully landscaped area is filled with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and artistically trimmed hedges that create a tranquil atmosphere ideal for leisurely strolls. Kids will especially love the garden's animal-shaped topiary. Visitors should definitely check out the viewing deck for breathtaking sunset vistas over the sea. The gentle breeze and panoramic views offer a perfect way to unwind and reconnect with nature amidst the urban setting. Families will enjoy the small play area for children and the quiet spots perfect for picnics or reading. This garden is a splendid mix of nature and tranquility, a must-visit for anyone seeking a break from Mumbai's hustle and bustle.

It's just a garden with nothing much else. However, it can be a nice spot to chat with friends if the heat isn't overwhelming. There are some trees providing shade when the garden isn't busy. For foreigners, the garden itself lacks a scenic view despite its hillside location. There is another park nearby that offers nicer views, but I'm unsure if it's worth the trip.

This garden is clean and well-maintained with ample open space. It wasn't crowded, which made my experience even better. I immediately thought it would be perfect for a photoshoot! The greenery enhances the surroundings beautifully, adding to one's look. It's also ideal for children, allowing them to run and play freely without too many people around.

The Hanging Gardens is a well-known attraction in Mumbai, located right next to Kamla Nehru Park. It's well-kept, featuring paved trails suitable for jogging, walking, or a leisurely stroll with lovely city skyline views. It’s built on an aquifer that supplies water to Mumbai, hence the name. Security is present, and it's noteworthy that the gardens are not wheelchair accessible due to stairs. Facilities include public restrooms and parking. The skyline view of the city and Antilia is quite impressive. There’s also a kids' play area along with local vendors selling coconut water and street food. It's highly recommended for a visit when in Mumbai.

It's a hidden gem that provides a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle, and I highly recommend a visit for nature lovers.
