Haji Ali Dargah: A Sacred Retreat in Mumbai

Overview

Nestled in the vibrant city of Mumbai, Haji Ali Dargah is not only a spiritual site but also a remarkable piece of architecture. This breathtaking tomb of the revered saint Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari dates back to the 15th century, showcasing exquisite Indian-Islamic design, including a stunning onion dome. According to legend, Haji Ali was a prosperous merchant from Uzbekistan, known for his divine powers and compassion. After a miraculous event involving a woman in need, he decided to settle in the coastal area of Mumbai, where he later passed away during a pilgrimage to Mecca. In a unique turn of fate, his casket was returned to the shores of Mumbai, leading to the construction of this sanctuary. Interestingly, Haji Ali Dargah is situated on an islet, becoming isolated during high tide, and accessible via a walkway when the waters recede. Visitors are welcomed into a grand marble courtyard adorned with intricate designs that include the 99 names of Allah. As part of the spiritual experience, devotees receive rose water, known for its healing properties, while enjoying soulful Sufi qawwali performances on Fridays. Haji Ali Dargah is not only a place for prayer but also a serene escape, conveniently located near Mahim Bay and the bustling Crawford Market.

This place deserves no introduction as it is renowned across various religions. I have visited three times and found true peace each time. Although it can get very crowded due to its fame, the stories surrounding the makbara situated in the ocean add to its allure. The distinct positive energy of this place is healing and offers a delightful experience. I eagerly look forward to visiting it as often as possible.

Haji Ali Dargah is a stunning and serene location in Mumbai, set in the middle of the sea. The view, especially at high tide, is breathtaking. The architecture is beautiful, and the atmosphere is calm and spiritual. While the walkway can become overcrowded and sometimes unclean, the experience remains special. Morning or evening visits are ideal as the weather is pleasant. The sea breeze adds to the peaceful ambiance, making it a must-see place at least once.

My visit to Haji Ali Dargah was a memorable journey. Beginning from Mahalaxmi, I enjoyed a scenic walk to the dargah. The path is well-marked and easy to follow. As you approach, you go through a subway leading to the walkway over the sea. The breathtaking location provides an incredible view of the Arabian Sea. Along the path, several small kiosks offer flowers, chadars, and other offerings for visitors. The sea breeze enhances the serene atmosphere, though one should remain cautious near the water due to unpredictable waves. Once inside, the environment is tranquil and spiritual, allowing you to sit, make dua, and enjoy soulful qawwali performances. I found a place designated for keeping footwear before entering. Overall, my experience at Haji Ali Dargah was wonderful, blending spirituality, stunning architecture, and scenic beauty into a truly unforgettable visit.
