Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium: A Gateway to the Universe

Overview

Located in the vibrant city of Montreal, the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium offers visitors an extraordinary journey into the cosmos. Opened in 2013, this cutting-edge natural science museum is a successor to the original Montreal Planetarium, which captivated millions between 1966 and 2011. The modern design features aluminum elements and innovative architecture that draws in astronomy enthusiasts and curious minds alike. The planetarium boasts two separate theaters, each presenting distinct perspectives on the universe: one rooted in scientific inquiry and the other exploring the poetic dimensions of space. This unique approach is the brainchild of renowned creators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, who expertly weave together art and science in thought-provoking exhibitions. A highlight of the planetarium is the interactive digital exhibit, 'Exo: Our Search for Life in the Universe,' where guests can engage hands-on with astrobiology topics while encountering over 300 meteorite specimens, including rare pieces from Mars and the Moon. The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium is part of Montreal's dynamic cultural landscape, making it a must-visit destination for anyone intrigued by the mysteries of space.

I visited the planetarium recently, and it was an incredible experience! For those fascinated by galaxies and stars, this is a must-visit. We attended an exhibition and a show about stars and Mars, both of which were truly captivating. The highlight was the stunning 360° cinema experience. Watching the stars and moon on such a massive screen felt surreal, like stepping into a dream. The presenter was very knowledgeable, explaining everything in detail, which made it easy to follow and enjoy. The soothing background music enhanced the magical atmosphere, making the entire experience unforgettable. This activity was very calming, and I will definitely return. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful and awe-inspiring outing!

It was a delightful experience. The Aurora movie was fantastic. If you missed the northern lights in person, this is the next best alternative. The dome-shaped theatre made the experience feel incredibly real. I had a great time and highly recommend it!

I had a great overall experience. There’s a wide variety of films available, though most are in French. If you prefer something in English, be ready to wait as it took me about 2–3 hours for an English-language movie to be shown. Despite the wait, it was definitely worth it!

I didn’t get the chance to see the main events, which are the cinematic screenings, but the area beneath was fascinating to read and learn about meteorites! The staff at the reception were very helpful in providing me with all the relevant information. I never realized how cool meteorites were until now!

Although our visit to the Planetarium was enjoyable, the experience felt quite short and a bit underwhelming. It mainly consisted of just the movie, with little else to explore. Extra kid-friendly, hands-on exhibits, like solar system models or NASA displays, would have enhanced the visit for children. At $24 for a ticket, the brief experience didn’t seem like a great deal, particularly for families. For a family of four, it totals nearly $75, which appears steep for what’s offered. Thankfully, I had purchased a 5-museum pass that included the Planetarium, but for someone buying a ticket solely for this, it may not feel justified. I wanted to share this to help others manage their expectations. If you plan to visit, be aware that your ticket primarily covers the movie, which is enjoyable yet limited in scope.
