Mary Queen of the World Cathedral: A Majestic Basilica in Montreal

Overview

Mary Queen of the World Cathedral, located in the heart of Montreal, is an architectural marvel that serves as the seat of the city's Roman Catholic archdiocese. Originally built to replace the Saint-Jacques Cathedral after its destruction in 1862, construction began in 1864 under the guidance of Mgr Ignace Bourget, who envisioned a design inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The cathedral, completed and consecrated in 1894, was rededicated as Mary Queen of the World in 1955 by Pope Pius XII. This impressive minor basilica measures 333 feet in length and stands 252 feet high, making it the third largest church in Quebec. Noteworthy elements of the cathedral include statues representing patron saints, stunning artwork depicting Montreal's early history, and a lavish baldachin over the altar. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2000, this cathedral is not only a center of faith but also a treasure trove of cultural significance.

The cathedral's magnificent facade is a sight to behold. I took the metro from Chinatown to visit; there’s no entrance fee to enjoy this beauty. I captured photos of the stunning interior and stood right underneath the impressive dome.

This church is truly beautiful! I was amazed by the intricate details and festive decor for Christmas. It's not crowded at all, which surprised me since this church is less known compared to others in Montreal. The staff are very welcoming and provide excellent guidance.

Queen Mary Mother Cathedral reminds me of the Vatican; it's a must-see in Montreal. They have a dedicated chapel for the Blessed Sacrament, and a serene space to spend quiet time with Jesus. I visit frequently for mass and for peaceful moments with the Lord.

Mary Queen of the World Cathedral is just across the Fairmont Hotel, famous for John Lennon’s bed-in and the recording of 'Give Peace a Chance'. The cathedral is truly peaceful and beautiful—definitely worth a half-hour visit.
