Explore the Beauty of Basilique Notre-Dame in Montreal

Overview

Basilique Notre-Dame, located in the heart of Montreal, is an iconic example of Gothic Revival architecture, towering at an impressive height. Established in 1657 by the Sulpician Order, this historic church underwent significant expansion, with the current structure being dedicated in 1829. Its grand interior is adorned with vivid colors, including a striking deep blue ceiling peppered with golden stars and a sanctuary filled with radiant hues. Visitors can admire exquisite stained glass windows that narrate the religious history of the area, along with a remarkable collection of wooden carvings and statues. The magnificent Casavant Freres pipe organ, dating back to 1891, is a must-see, featuring four keyboards and 7,000 pipes. As a dynamic cultural venue, Basilique Notre-Dame also hosts various concerts and events, making it not just a site of architectural wonder, but a vibrant part of Montreal's cultural landscape.

The Basilique Notre-Dame is stunning, filled with intricate architectural details. During my visit in January 2025, there was some scaffolding present. Many people overlook the beautiful sides of the building which offer a quieter viewing experience. I highly recommend returning for the Aura event, as it completely transforms the space. Make sure to buy tickets online in advance, as they cost more at the door. Overall, it was a delightful and stress-free visit.

This place is truly a gem! Entry requires a ticket, and there are discounts available for students and seniors. I enjoyed a peaceful moment sitting away from the chatter of tourists in a quieter corner. I will surely visit again.

I found the Basilica to be an overwhelming experience. There is a lot to see, and it’s impressively calming and quiet. The architecture is breathtaking, and the organ is the second largest globally. We spent about an hour there, while others lingered longer to appreciate the details. A prayer room is available for anyone who wants to visit. I believe everyone should get an opportunity to witness its beauty.

Definitely purchase tickets in advance since the ticket lines can be incredibly long, but if you already have tickets there's no wait at all to enter. It's a stunning and historically rich place with beautiful artworks. However, it was quite crowded during my visit, which diminished the experience a bit. I recommend avoiding weekends or going in the middle of the afternoon. Visiting on a weekday right when they open would provide a better experience.
