Papalote Children’s Museum: A World of Discovery in Mexico City

Overview

Designed by acclaimed architect Ricardo Legorreta and opened in 1993, the museum consists of five distinct areas, featuring nearly 300 interactive exhibits that cover a wide range of topics from science to music and ecology. Each area encourages hands-on learning through activities that promote self-esteem, communication, and creative expression. The Maya Garden, with its pre-Hispanic theme and climbable Mayan pyramid, provides a unique outdoor experience for young explorers. With its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, visitors often feel as if they're strolling through a natural forest, making the Papalote Museum a must-see destination for families in Mexico City.

This is the best children’s museum we've visited! It's interactive and perfect for all ages. We spent hours exploring without seeing everything. My daughter loved the shopping area, veterinarian section, and the science lab. For English speakers, some staff wear buttons indicating they speak English, making it easier to enjoy the museum even if you don't speak Spanish. It's a fantastic addition to any CDMX itinerary for families.

If you're in Mexico City with kids, you absolutely must visit this museum! Make sure to fit it into your busy schedule! Even if you don't have children, it's still a worthwhile trip. They cover relevant topics like climate and nature in a fun way that engages everyone. I took my kids, and they were curious the entire time, which made it an enriching experience! We spent the whole day there, and the outdoor food court made it convenient to grab a bite and continue exploring. The place was tidy and had accessible restrooms. Parking was easy, and the staff were friendly and relaxed. I can't recommend this place enough!

An incredible museum and play facility for kids! We brought a 4 and a 5-year-old, and they had a blast. The balance of learning and playtime is perfect, especially the mini grocery store where they could shop and check out. The outdoor play areas are fantastic for kids staying in hotels or without outdoor space. The staff was exceptionally friendly and ready to teach. The food court has various options, although you must leave the museum to access it. Highly, highly recommend this museum!

A phenomenal spot for kids! We visited after another museum, and there were so many hands-on activities. The kids loved being able to touch and interact with all the exhibits, especially the slide. It's best to plan for at least 4 hours, but a full day is ideal to enjoy everything without feeling rushed. There are fast food options available on-site, so you don't need to go far for meals. Most staff members spoke English, which is a plus. I recommend visiting during the weekdays.

This is a must-visit if you're traveling to Mexico City with kids! This science center is larger than any I've seen, and what impressed me most was the engaging staff who worked hands-on with the kids during the lessons. Rather than a more hands-off approach, kids have the chance to attend mini-classes to learn! For instance, my kids participated in a science lab about boats and water density, and even wired a battery for a light switch. Their favorite was the animation desk, where they made their own movie! We spent four hours and plan to return to see the areas we missed. There are plenty of dining options and ample bathrooms, making it easy for families. After your visit, take a left outside the entrance to see concrete art sculptures leading to a skate park—a full day of fun!
