Built in the 1800s, this iconic bluestone structure housed a plethora of criminals, including the legendary outlaw Ned Kelly. The gaol operated until 1929 and witnessed 133 hangings, making it a significant landmark in the criminal justice history of the region. Today, it serves not only as a museum but also as an interactive experience, featuring a military prison from WWII and educational tours. Visitors can explore three fascinating levels of exhibitions, including Ned Kelly's death mask, and participate in engaging tours like the Night in the Watch House Tour and the infamous Hangman's Night Tour. The complex also offers an arresting educational experience with a 40-minute interactive tour led by the Charge Sergeant. Enjoy family-friendly reenactments of historic trials and multimedia displays that shed light on the darker sides of history. Don't miss out on the convenient National Trust 2 for 1 pass that allows you to explore both the Old Gaol and Polly Woodside. A free tram service connects these two historic sites for an easy visit.

A captivating glimpse into the history of incarceration in Melbourne. Discover the notorious inmates and the processes that took place within the original cells. For a small additional fee, you can also experience life in the remand center next to the gaol. However, if you are apprehensive about being yelled at, reconsider this! Overall, a valuable visit when in Melbourne. Just a note, the iron suit worn by Ned Kelly can be found in the City Library nearby.

A spooky experience wandering around the Gaol and learning about the inmates. The extra $5 to visit the watch house was definitely worth it, with Sergeant Pepper doing an excellent and informative job. You can download an app before your visit that provides information for a self-guided tour. Facilities including toilets are available.

For a $35 ticket with no time limitations, this place is highly informative and somewhat eerie given its history. Each floor has been preserved well. The death masks were a surprising yet fascinating addition to the experience. Listening to the audio guides wherever available is something I would recommend. My rating: 8/10.

I visited the old Melbourne Gaol with my teenage sons and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The architecture is incredible, and the stories, displays, and information in the cells are remarkable. We took part in the Watchtower tour where we were 'arrested' by the Sergeant, who performed wonderfully. I highly recommend this experience. Thank you!

If you're planning a visit, don't miss adding The Watcher’s house. It was fantastic thanks to our guide, who made the experience truly memorable. I would definitely suggest this additional $5 tour to everyone.
