Koutoubia Mosque: A Jewel of Marrakesh

Overview

Located near the bustling Djemaa el-Fna square, Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakesh and stands as a masterpiece of Almohad architecture. Built in the 12th century, this stunning establishment replaced an earlier Almoravid mosque, showcasing a harmonious design of beauty and proportion. Koutoubia, meaning 'book', reflects the rich literary history of the area, once home to a vibrant book market. The mosque boasts 16 parallel naves, with a striking central nave supported by 112 elegant columns. Its renowned minaret, rising nearly 70 meters, is one of only three surviving Almohad minarets worldwide, influencing numerous famous structures such as the Hassan Tower and La Giralda in Spain. Adorned with intricate ceramic tile work and crowned with distinctive copper orbs, the minaret features elements symbolic of Marrakesh's cultural heritage. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the inner sanctum, the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful space to admire this architectural wonder.
