Palacio de Comunicaciones: A Gem of Architectural Excellence in Madrid

Overview

Constructed in 1904, the Palacio de Comunicaciones stands as a testament to stunning architectural innovation, originally built to serve as the hub for telephone, telegraph, and postal services in Madrid. Designed by renowned architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquin Otamendi, the building captivates visitors with its eclectic Neo-Gothic, modern, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. The use of steel framing allows for expansive open spaces filled with natural light, showcasing gracefully curved façades adorned with ornate pilasters, Gothic pinnacles, and striking cartouches. Upon entering, guests are greeted by grand marble staircases that lead into an interior with magnificent stained glass ceilings, dramatic white marble columns, and captivating mythological statues that echo a cathedral's grandeur. Home to the City Hall since 2007, the Palacio also features a museum that exhibits a collection of historical artifacts connected to its rich past. For just €2, take the opportunity to explore the rooftop, offering breathtaking views of Madrid’s skyline and beyond.

I only viewed the Palacio de Comunicaciones from the outside, but it remains an iconic and beautiful landmark in Madrid. It's a fantastic photo opportunity, particularly at night when it’s illuminated. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a quick stop!

The Cibeles Fountain is a landmark that can't be missed in Madrid, featuring a breathtaking sculpture of the Roman goddess Cybele in her chariot with two lions. Nestled in the bustling city center at the intersection of Alcalá and Paseo del Prado, this location is vibrant with activity. Although it can be challenging to appreciate it up close during busy hours, the fountain shines brightly at night, creating a magical view. It is a favored gathering place, especially during celebrations by Real Madrid fans. A visit to Madrid wouldn't be complete without experiencing its historical and cultural significance.

The monument is lit up in solidarity with Ukraine. There's also a wonderful Irish pub close by that serves amazing burgers.
