Discover the Museo del Ferrocarril in Madrid

Overview

The Museo del Ferrocarril, located in the heart of Madrid, showcases one of the most impressive collections of railway-related artifacts in Europe. Housed within a stunning 19th-century railway station, designed by the renowned Gustave Eiffel, the museum offers visitors an intimate look into the evolution of rail transportation. Natural light floods the high-ceilinged space, enhancing the viewing experience of the historic steam locomotives and various exhibits dedicated to railway infrastructure. From railway station clocks to traction history, each section inside the museum tells a unique story of Madrid's railway heritage. A highlight of the museum is the Tren de la Fresa, a vintage train that operates between Madrid and Aranjuez during the Spring and Autumn seasons, allowing guests to step into the past. The museum also offers access to a Photographic Library, Railway Library, and Historic Archives, making it an educational hub for railway enthusiasts. Visit the Museo del Ferrocarril Tuesday to Friday from 09:30 AM to 03:00 PM, Sunday from 10:00 AM to 03:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 08:00 PM. A truly enjoyable place for families and kids! We visited with our 3 and a half-year-old and had a fantastic experience! The entry ticket is very affordable, and children under 4 get in free! The museum showcases impressive train engines and coaches. The highlights for us were the Renfe Simulator, where you can feel like you're in the driver's seat, and the Mini Model Train World with different trains operating through stunning landscapes of Spain! The museum is conveniently located right outside Delicias Metro Station, close to Atocha Station! I highly recommend this place! Make sure to arrive at least an hour before closing to fully enjoy the Simulator and the Mini Train World, as those attractions close half an hour before the museum itself does. Also, double-check the Sunday hours, as we saw many visitors outside after 3 PM who weren’t aware of the early closing time that day.

I visited on a Saturday during the flea market, and it was fantastic! The market had a wonderful mix of food, crafts, and second-hand goods. The museum itself was also excellent and definitely worth it on its own.

As a huge fan of museums, I absolutely loved this one. Exploring the old trains, especially the interiors like the beds, kitchen, and restaurant, was delightful. The entry fee is just €7 per person. I found the information provided in English to be very helpful. I'm sure kids will enjoy this place too.

A lovely train museum! If you're in the area, it's a must-visit spot. It can get quite hot inside during the summer months in Madrid. The museum offers plenty of bathrooms and numerous exhibits to check out. There are two train simulators, and the second floor features an extensive model train display showcasing history and progress. Unfortunately, the cafeteria car was closed.
