Discover Museu São Roque and Sacred Art Museum in Lisbon

Overview

Nestled in the heart of Lisbon, the Museu São Roque and Sacred Art Museum offer an extraordinary glimpse into the opulence of Jesuit artistic heritage. Though its exterior may appear unremarkable, stepping inside reveals a breathtaking architectural masterpiece. Designed by Filippo Terzi, the sacred space boasts a spectacular painted wood ceiling and eight chapels adorned with magnificent baroque art. The crown jewel, the Chapel of Saint John, known for being the world’s most expensive chapel, showcases a dazzling array of luxurious materials, including lapis lazuli, gold, and alabaster, meticulously transported from Rome to Lisbon in 1747 and reassembled. The sacristy displays poignant scenes from the lives of Jesuit saints alongside invaluable relics, including a piece of wood from Christ’s crib and a thorn from His crown of thorns. Adjacent to the church is the Sacred Art Museum, housing a rich collection of religious artifacts and intricately embroidered vestments alongside stunning baroque silver and 16th-century paintings, making this site a haven for art and history lovers alike.

This museum is connected to the Jesuit church, but unlike the church, you have to pay to enter (€5). It's a reasonable fee for a decent museum, showcasing many interesting pieces and a continuation of the church's architecture. There's also a lovely statue outside.

The Museum of Sao Roque is attached to the historic Church of Sao Roque at Largo Trindade Coelho. Entry is (€2.50 per adult) and the church can also be visited for free as part of your trip. The Museum has two floors and approximately 9-10 gallery rooms filled with church artefacts, artworks and historic religious items. The treasures from the Chapel of St. John the Baptist near the high altar are the highlights. There is a café with inner courtyard seating if you're looking for a drink or a bite before or after your visit. Overall, the Museum of Sao Roque offers a great collection, complementing your visit to the church, making for a very enjoyable experience. It's advisable to set aside around 20+ minutes to fully explore the museum's collection.

Stunning! The richness of art and religious symbolism is incredible. It's a must-see. The museum is worth the €5 entrance fee and holds history that dates back to the early 16th century.

An amazing museum with a very low entry fee. A true gem in Lisbon that should attract more visitors; it is often empty of tourists. Very conveniently located near one of Lisbon's best sightseeing spots. You should definitely visit, the ticket costs €2.50.

A quaint little museum right next to the church of the same name. You can enter the museum directly from the church. They feature many paintings with religious themes and other related artifacts, some of which are truly remarkable. There's also a small café available.
