Igreja da São Vicente de Fora: A Jewel of Mannerist Architecture in Lisbon

Overview

Igreja da São Vicente de Fora, or the Monastery of Saint Vincent Outside the Walls, is a masterpiece located in Lisbon, originally built in 1147 outside the ancient walls of Lisbon. The current structure, completed in the 17th century, showcases the elegance of Mannerist architecture while incorporating elements from various styles. This church, dedicated to Lisbon's patron saint, is not only a spiritual haven but also a historical site as it houses the House of Braganza Royal Pantheon, where the last monarchs of Portugal are laid to rest. Visitors will be captivated by the exquisite Sacristy adorned with colorful marble, intricate 18th-century azulejo tile panels, and a striking Italian Renaissance façade. The interior features a barrel-vaulted ceiling, unique medieval cisterns, and a stunning ivory statue of Jesus. I absolutely adore the Mannerist complex – its simplicity and symmetry are perfect! It’s a tranquil spot, allowing you to take your time and appreciate every detail. The exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into the history from the medieval era, though most texts are in Portuguese. The architectural aspects are truly worth visiting, especially the cloisters and the rooftop terrace, which showcase stunning views of Lisbon. The admission fee for adults is €8, with a discount available through the Lisboa Card!

During our few days in Lisbon, we spotted this from the castle and decided to visit. It was beautiful and well worth the entrance fee. There was so much to see, from the exhibition of ancient cloaks to the delightful blue picture tiles throughout the complex. We even ventured up to the roof, and despite the wet and grey weather, we still enjoyed some lovely views.

Igreja de São Vicente de Fora is a lovely site! While the church itself may not be extraordinarily impressive, the monastery is absolutely stunning!! I was enchanted by the white and blue tiles adorning much of the walls! Such an enjoyable exhibition! Plus, it was not crowded at all! If you’re wondering, it’s a must-see! I totally recommend it!

Incredible, intricate tile work! And marble! It’s worth paying for a self-guided tour around the complex. There’s a 360-degree viewing terrace in the tower. I enjoyed taking the time to read all the fables depicted in the tiled panels.
