Absolutely stunning.
We were lucky to journey here during the peak of autumn leaves and at every turn, we were treated to the most exquisite views of red, orange, and yellow hues. Among the many beautiful sites we explored during our travels, Ryoanji stood out as the most breathtaking for me.
I truly valued the simplicity and tranquility of the temple and its zen garden. Coming from a noisy and chaotic environment, it was wonderful to sit peacefully by the garden with fellow travelers, appreciating the beauty of stillness and being present.
Additionally, there was a stunning display of dragon screens painted by a former Prime Minister of Japan that was showcased during our visit.
Overall, this was one of the key highlights of our trip.
You will be glad to visit this Zen destination. I admired how it’s not overcrowded, especially considering that Kyoto is often bustling with tourists. Although it may not be overwhelmingly impressive, it’s a place where you can find peace. Besides the renowned stone garden, the trees and pond are so beautifully picturesque, like a painting.
*I highly recommend trying the tofu meal from the restaurant there - delightful food with a lovely view = PERFECT!
Ryoan-ji is a calm and peaceful location, famous for its notable rock garden. If you find yourself nearby, it can be a lovely place to pause, unwind, and soak in the tranquil ambiance. The surrounding gardens and pond are also enjoyable, offering a soothing break.
However, if reaching it requires a significant detour, it might not be worth the effort. Given the admission fee, the experience feels somewhat underwhelming compared to other sites in Kyoto. While the rock garden is distinct, it may not make it worth venturing out of your way if you are pressed for time.
Such a lovely temple to explore. The best aspect is that it’s quieter than some of the more popular spots. We ended up dining there, as enjoying a meal in a traditional, serene setting overlooking the garden is an experience itself. They offer two tofu sets: a basic one for 1800 yen, and another with various vegetables for 3800 yen. Either way, it’s a wonderful experience that we are grateful to have had.
This is a very tranquil temple featuring a beautiful and inspiring zen garden. I visited during the winter, but I can only imagine how much more stunning the temple and its surroundings would be in spring.
I definitely recommend visiting this serene zen garden after exploring Kinkakuji (Golden Temple). The two temples are in close proximity and easily accessible by bus.
