Explore Kyoto Tower: A Symbol of Japan's Rich Heritage

Overview

Kyoto Tower is a striking and modern addition to the historic cityscape of Kyoto, standing tall at 131 meters. This iconic structure, resembling a candle, is located directly across from Kyoto Station and is designed without a traditional steel frame, making it a remarkable feat of engineering. Since its completion in 1964, Kyoto Tower has provided visitors with outstanding panoramic views of the city and beyond, reaching as far as Osaka on clear days. Visitors can ascend to the observation deck situated 100 meters high to take in spectacular vistas of the ancient city below. The tower is also home to a variety of experiences, from shopping at souvenir shops to dining in renowned restaurants, and even a public bath in its basement. Don’t miss the chance to meet Tawawa-Chan, the tower's beloved mascot, and enjoy the stunning vistas both during the day and illuminated at night. Easily accessible from Kyoto Station, a visit to Kyoto Tower is a must for anyone exploring this beautiful city.

On April 13th, I only observed Kyoto Tower from outside due to a tight schedule that didn't allow for a visit inside. The views must be amazing, and I could only gaze from the vicinity of Kyoto station. I plan to visit the tower on my next trip and capture some photos.

For those seeking a 360° panoramic view of Kyoto City, this iconic tower is a must-visit. It's the tallest structure in Kyoto, featuring an observation deck at 100m—tall enough for good city views. Located just across from Kyoto Station, entry is ¥900 for adults. We didn’t enter due to long queues, but the views from the outside were sufficient for us.

Nidec Kyoto Tower, positioned opposite Kyoto Station, stands at 131m high and includes an observation deck and restaurant at the top. You can also find dining options at the base of the tower. It's beautiful to view from Kyoto Station or the observation deck. The telescopes inside are free to use. I visited during its 60th anniversary in 2024.

On our final day in Kyoto, we stored our bags at the station and walked over to the towers. Tickets are available at the tower entrance. The views of the city were excellent, and the binoculars offered high-quality clarity. My children had a lot of fun observing the surroundings. You can easily spend 45 minutes here, and the staff were friendly, making for a pleasant experience.
