Explore the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur

Overview

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building stands as one of Kuala Lumpur's most breathtaking landmarks, located on Merdeka Square. Constructed in 1897 and named after the Sultan of Selangor, this architectural masterpiece was initially the secretariat for the British colonial administration and later served as the home for Malaysia's supreme courts. Designed by A.C. Norman, who also created the Jamek Mosque, the building showcases a harmonious blend of Moorish-Mughal influences alongside Gothic and Western architectural elements. With its striking curved colonnade adorned with pointed arches and prominent circular towers topped with copper domes, it creates an impressive 138-meter-long façade. The splendid 41.2-meter clock tower is a central feature of this historical gem. In the evenings, the illuminated LED outlines highlight its architectural beauty, making it a must-see for visitors. Though generally open for organized tours, the building occasionally hosts exhibitions, adding to its allure.
