Hurva Synagogue: A Timeless Icon in Jerusalem

Overview

The Hurva Synagogue, located in the heart of Jerusalem, is a significant landmark with a captivating history dating back to the early 18th century. Initially constructed by followers of Rabbi Yehudah he-Hasid, this sacred space witnessed several destructions, including the prominent devastations during the wars of the 20th century. In 2010, following years of planning and restoration, the synagogue was rebuilt to reflect its 19th-century architectural brilliance. Today, it serves as both an active place of worship and a center for Jewish education. Visitors are welcomed to explore its imposing dome, which boasts the tallest Holy Ark in the world, and enjoy sweeping views from the dome's veranda. Guided tours are available, offering a deeper insight into the synagogue’s rich heritage and elegant interiors.

This place is wonderful! It is recommended for all. It doesn't take long to explore since it's a small National Park. Plus, the two bridges are quite manageable. Easy parking available, just pay through the app.

The Hurva Synagogue's history alone makes the small entrance fee worthwhile. Additionally, it offers stunning views over all of Jerusalem. The free audioguides are very helpful.

I first visited the Hurva Synagogue in 2004 when it was still in ruins. Now, it has been beautifully restored. The guided tour is particularly useful for understanding the synagogue's history and that of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City. The Hurva is located in the Rova or central square of the Jewish Quarter.

This synagogue is rich in history. Reading about it was fascinating. It serves as a place for studying the Torah, and the view from the top is truly remarkable.

I was fortunate to access the rooftop. I'm not certain if it's usually open, but if you get the chance, I highly recommend taking it. It provides a beautiful view of the Temple Mount and the Old City. There's also a map with English audio at the top. The synagogue offers a stunning large public sukkah during Sukkot, with kosher refreshments. On Chol Hamoed nights, there are joyful celebrations inside with live music and dancing.
