Giac Lam Pagoda: A Historic Landmark in Ho Chi Minh City

Overview

Giac Lam Pagoda, located in the vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh City, is one of the oldest temples in the area, built in 1744 by Ly Thuy Long. Originally established as a venue for Lunar New Year celebrations, this picturesque pagoda is a testament to traditional southern architectural styles. It features three main structures: a ceremonial hall, a chanting hall, and a dining hall, adorned with magnificent wooden pillars and intricate red and gold carvings. The ceremonial hall houses a towering Buddha statue and the Nine Dragon Altar, which depicts significant events from the life of Prince Siddhartha. Visitors can admire a collection of 118 statues crafted from various materials, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens filled with dragon sculptures and temple guardians. The pagoda is crowned by a remarkable seven-story hexagonal stupa, which, standing at 32 meters, is the tallest Buddhist stupa in Ho Chi Minh City, offering stunning panoramic views from the top. Giac Lam Pagoda is a tranquil oasis that beautifully blends history, spirituality, and art, making it a must-visit destination for travelers.

Though a little further outside the city centre, this nice Buddhist complex features a pagoda, temple, and statues. You can walk up the pagoda for very nice views. Due to its location, it was very empty and peaceful, giving you plenty of space to discover the place.

This is an interesting temple complex well worth a visit. You can walk to the top of the tower for a stunning view of the city from the terrace. You have to scramble through a low window to get to the terrace, so it's not for the faint-hearted, but the views are great.

Very old temple with original statues and architecture. However, new architecture and statues added without a plan make it lose its sacred atmosphere.
