Explore the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence

Overview

The Basilica of Santa Croce stands as the largest Franciscan church globally and is often referred to as the 'Temple of the Italian Glories.' Nestled within the marshlands outside the original city walls, this iconic church was established in 1294 over prior religious foundations. Architect Arnolfo di Cambio designed the church, which was consecrated in 1442. Visitors can admire the Cappella dei Pazzi, created by the renowned Filippo Brunelleschi, and the neo-Gothic façade designed by Nicolo Matas in 1863. The basilica is a treasure trove of art, featuring masterpieces by artists such as Donatello and frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi. The surrounding Piazza Santa Croce is famous for its annual medieval soccer game, making it a lively cultural spot in Florence.

A must visit when in Florence. This basilica is significant for its antiquity, stunning architecture, and history as it houses the remains of many illustrious figures, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. The marble tombs are masterpieces themselves. Additionally, there is a side chapel built for the Medici family, along with a display of relics, including a robe of St. Francis of Assisi.

What an amazing experience to witness the final resting place of one of history’s most influential painters. Be prepared for a long wait, but it’s definitely worth it. The basilica features many tombs adorned with fascinating family crests. We only wished we had more time to fully explore this significant site and appreciate its beauty. Although the basilica has undergone renovations, it can be quite cold inside, so bring a jacket.

A fantastic basilica! My partner and I visited on a Monday afternoon in mid-October. It wasn’t too crowded, but it wasn’t completely quiet either. The entry fee was reasonable at 9 euros per person. The basilica is breathtaking, showcasing numerous religious paintings from the Renaissance and earlier periods. The significant historical context provided by the Medici Chapel adds to the allure. We were especially eager to see the graves of famous figures like Galileo, Machiavelli, and Michelangelo, which are beautifully crafted and solemn. A wonderful place to spend an hour. Highly recommended.

It features numerous art masterpieces, including Donatello's crucifix. Among its tombs are some of the most notable individuals in history, such as Michelangelo, Rossini, Machiavelli, and Galileo.

Florence boasts numerous churches, but what makes Basilica Santa Croce stand out is its status as the final resting place for many of history's greats, including Machiavelli, Galileo, and Michelangelo! Paying respects in such a significant place of worship is truly remarkable. Located only a few minutes away from Piazza della Signoria, visiting this basilica is an absolute must when in Florence!
