Trsteno Arboretum: A Historical Botanical Paradise

Overview

Nestled just 24 kilometers from Dubrovnik, the Trsteno Arboretum stands as the oldest arboretum in Croatia, with origins dating back to the late 15th century by the noble House of Gozze. Declared a natural rarity in 1948 and a protected natural monument in 1965, this breathtaking location features a rich collection of over 300 tree species, including ancient plane trees that are over 500 years old. The arboretum gained fame as a filming location for HBO's Game of Thrones, showcasing its stunning landscapes and historical structures. Visitors can marvel at the Renaissance summer residence, intricately designed ruins by former owner Vito Gucetic Bosiljevic, and captivating sculptures throughout the grounds. Enjoy picturesque views from the belvedere pavilion and explore unique plant species such as Japanese banana trees and magnolia. Delight in the serene charm of the Fountain of Poseidon and the tranquil aqueducts as you walk through this enchanting botanical haven.

An enchanting destination with stunning hillside views, though elderly visitors should be mindful of the terrain. The botanical exhibits are fascinating, showcasing trees with rich histories and informative labels. A delightful place for a morning stroll. During our autumn visit, the café was closed and the vending machine wasn't functioning, but the restrooms were clean.

A nice walk, although not particularly impressive. Consider extending your visit by heading down to the small harbor. The entrance fee of 10 euros feels a bit steep. Unfortunately, the new café concept wasn’t open for coffee.

This is one of my favorite spots in Croatia! I’ve wanted to visit ever since I saw it featured in Game of Thrones. The Arboretum was stunning, especially during our early morning visit at 09:00 when it was less crowded, allowing us to take photos freely. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, finishing our walk in about an hour. Although it’s not large, it offers breathtaking views of the sea and is definitely worth a visit! I’d love to return one day. ♡

We visited in late May and while I have seen more magnificent botanical gardens worldwide, the cliffs here offer a beautiful view. A special highlight is its significance as the filming location for Game of Thrones scenes depicting King’s Landing and the pier associated with Sansa's escape.
