Visit St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Dubrovnik

Overview

St. Ignatius Loyola Church, a remarkable Jesuit church located in Dubrovnik, was constructed by architect Andrea Pozzo between 1667 and 1725. Renowned for its Baroque architecture, the church features a grand staircase leading to its entrance, reminiscent of Rome's famous Spanish Steps. The interior is equally striking, boasting a single nave adorned with white arched columns, splendid sculptures, and side chapels that highlight the life of St. Ignatius, masterfully depicted by painter Gaetano Garcia. The dome above the altar commands attention with its impressive design, while the adjacent belfry adds to the church's aesthetic appeal. Visitors can also enjoy the replica of the Grotto of Lourdes nearby, a favored photographic spot. Next to the church is the Jesuit College of Collegium Ragusinum, showcasing late 17th to early 18th-century architecture. St. Ignatius Loyola Church is a captivating destination year-round, especially during the warm summer months when events and local cafes enhance the experience.

This is a stunning church, both inside and out. A definite must-visit, and it doesn't cost anything! The altar and its backdrop are gorgeous, and the ambiance is so tranquil. I highly suggest taking a moment for reflection after strolling in the sun! I only managed to snap a picture hours later, in the dark 😅

It's free to enter. A very beautiful church located near the famous Jesuit stairs. The church and the stairs can get quite crowded with tourists taking Instagram photos and reminiscing about the Game of Thrones scenes. Once you're finished with that tour, exit on the right side where locals go; heading down the stairs leads to markets and restaurants eager to sell you something.

The Church of St. Ignatius is a hidden gem in Dubrovnik, providing a peaceful getaway from the busy Old Town. Its ornate features and grandeur will astonish you. The interior is just as remarkable, with beautiful frescoes and detailed craftsmanship. It's a calm and introspective place. The church's location at the top of a grand staircase enhances its allure, providing a beautiful view over the city. Visiting St. Ignatius is essential for anyone looking for a spiritual and architectural experience in Dubrovnik.

A beautiful church that transports you back in time the moment you enter. Free entry. Definitely worth visiting if you've made it up the Jesuit stairs (Cersei's walk of shame stairs 😅) during your Game of Thrones tour.
