Onofrio's Fountains: A Marvelous Duo in Dubrovnik

Overview

Onofrio's Fountains are two iconic water features that represent the architectural brilliance of the 15th century in Dubrovnik. Designed by the renowned architect Onofrio Giordano della Cava, these fountains are located strategically at either end of the Stradun, the city's main thoroughfare. The larger fountain, built between 1438 and 1440, is known for its impressive dome and 16-sided cupola adorned with intricate stone carvings, showcasing a blend of beauty and engineering. However, much of its original splendor has diminished due to the damage caused by the 1667 earthquake. The smaller fountain, constructed shortly after, features delightful dolphin motifs and served as a key water supply for local markets, highlighting its practical purpose in addition to its aesthetic appeal. Visitors can appreciate the intricate details of both fountains and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere they create, making them must-visit landmarks in Dubrovnik.

The Small Onofrio's Fountain (Mala Onofrijeva Fontana) is a charming piece of Dubrovnik's history, located near the Dominican Monastery. It serves as a counterpart to the more famous Large Onofrio's Fountain, both of which were designed in the 15th century by the Italian architect Onofrio della Cava as part of the city's advanced water supply system. While smaller and less ornate than its larger homonym, the fountain showcases delicate stonework and serves as a quaint reminder of medieval engineering. Though it doesn’t draw as much attention as the Large Onofrio’s Fountain near Pile Gate, its quieter location makes it a nice spot to appreciate Dubrovnik’s rich heritage. A lovely historical detail in the heart of the old town!

It’s a small, beautiful fountain, resembling a smaller sister to the other larger fountain, the Large Onofrio’s fountain. Both were designed by Onofrio Della Cava from Naples.

An old fountain that is quite beautiful. The water is off; nothing special. You don't need to stop, but you can take a picture of it on the go.
