Mljet Island: A Hidden Gem of the Adriatic Sea

Overview

Mljet Island, regarded as one of the Adriatic's most enchanting destinations, boasts breathtaking natural landscapes and rich history. Once part of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1345, this captivating island has since become a cherished part of Croatia. Spanning over 62 square miles, Mljet features dense forests and serene lakes, with Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) and Malo Jezero (Small Lake) as its crown jewels. The charming villages of Sobra and Pomena welcome visitors arriving via catamaran, boat, or ferry. For adventure seekers, the island offers bike rentals to explore its scenic paths. Notable attractions include the Mljet National Park, which provides modern facilities for nature lovers and a glimpse of its famed Benedictine Monastery. With the Ulysses Cave and beautiful beaches to discover, Mljet Island is a must-visit for anyone exploring Croatia. Ferries from Dubrovnik make it accessible during summer, while catamarans operate year-round.

My week at Hotel Odisej was splendid. The views from my room were exceptional; it may be a 3-star hotel, yet the customer service from NIKICA, LORENA, and JOSIP was absolutely 5-star. The director, Lindita, was also very involved! I intended to walk, swim, and enjoy delicious cocktails at the beach bar. This was my first visit to Croatia, and I absolutely plan to return. P.S. The sea is so clean, great for your body! Don't forget to check out the lakes.

This island is incredible; it has only about 900 inhabitants. The ferry ride from Stone is easy. The natural park is lovely. If you appreciate serenity, I visited in early June when the temperature was pleasant and the water refreshing! I didn't need to reserve a table at the top two restaurants on the island. It’s a solid 5 stars for me. If you seek crowds, bars, or Waterparks, this may not be your ideal getaway!

This is the most stunning island in southern Croatia and is home to a national park. The park's lakes and nature trails offer an unforgettable experience for those who love nature.

If you're a nature lover, this place is perfect for you. Beauty is everywhere you look. If you're into loud music and parties, you might find it dull after just two hours. This island is tranquil, not a party destination. I arrived from Dubrovnik by taking the kilro ferry to Pomena. Renting a room at Odisej Mljet is recommended (they even serve vegan food!). The park is a short walk from the hotel, and entrance is about 20 USD/Euro. There are lovely trails and beautiful, turquoise swimming spots. You can also rent bikes or take a boat to St. Mary Island, which hosts a historical church. There's a charming little restaurant in the park where you can grab a meal or coffee and enjoy the view of the lake. I truly appreciated this park; it is well-maintained and easy to navigate. The only downside was the lack of wildlife, but maybe that's because I visited in the afternoon when it was hot. I highly recommend visiting in the morning for a better experience. Overall, I adored this park. It's incredibly safe for a solo, vegan, female nature enthusiast.

My favorite spot in all of Croatia! This Adriatic island features a stunning lake with another island in the middle, home to an old church and a delightful restaurant. It reminds me of Bled Lake in Slovenia, but with saltwater! It's truly a natural beauty; I could spend an entire week here.
