Discover Fort Lovrijenac in Dubrovnik
Overview
Perched on a dramatic 37-meter high rock face, Fort Lovrijenac is one of Dubrovnik's most iconic fortifications. Built between 1018 and 1038, this fortress served as a crucial line of defense against maritime and land-based invaders. Its strategic position offers spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea, making it an essential stop for visitors. The fort features three distinct terraces that enhance its unique triangular shape. Visitors can traverse the upper parapets for an unparalleled panorama while exploring the impressive, centuries-old architecture within its walls. The robust structure features walls ranging from 60 centimeters to 12 meters thick, designed to protect against threats. A notable inscription at the gate, “non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro,” translates to “Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world,” encapsulating the fort's historical significance. Free access is available with a tour of the City Walls, and during the summer, guests can enjoy captivating theatrical performances, including renditions of Shakespeare's works, as part of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
