Discover Fort Lovrijenac in Dubrovnik

Overview

Perched on a dramatic 37-meter high rock face, Fort Lovrijenac is one of Dubrovnik's most iconic fortifications. Built between 1018 and 1038, this fortress served as a crucial line of defense against maritime and land-based invaders. Its strategic position offers spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea, making it an essential stop for visitors. The fort features three distinct terraces that enhance its unique triangular shape. Visitors can traverse the upper parapets for an unparalleled panorama while exploring the impressive, centuries-old architecture within its walls. The robust structure features walls ranging from 60 centimeters to 12 meters thick, designed to protect against threats. A notable inscription at the gate, “non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro,” translates to “Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world,” encapsulating the fort's historical significance. Free access is available with a tour of the City Walls, and during the summer, guests can enjoy captivating theatrical performances, including renditions of Shakespeare's works, as part of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

We purchased tickets for this site as a combined offer with the walls of Dubrovnik. I suggest buying them online, but purchasing at the location is also an option. The fort is positioned high on a cliff, so be prepared for a lot of stairs. However, the breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea make the climb worthwhile. The only drawback is the lack of exhibits inside. Overall, this fort is absolutely worth a visit.

The location is magnificent, featuring towering stone walls of the ancient fortress and clear waters below. A quick walk down leads to kayaking opportunities through the calm sea. Nearby, you'll find shops and restaurants, including special cocktail lounges for unwinding.

This fort is quite impressive; there's not much to see inside, so about 30 minutes is enough. The views of the sea and harbor are absolutely stunning. We arrived around 6:30 PM and enjoyed the cool evening breeze while overlooking the old town on one side and the sunset on the other. Prepare for some steps, but it’s manageable. Also, it's a hotspot for Game of Thrones fans and is included in the Dubrovnik Pass.

Visiting Dubrovnik is incomplete without this experience. The views are spectacular! Even if Game of Thrones isn’t your thing, exploring on your own is very rewarding. For tourists, I recommend getting the Dubrovnik Pass, which grants access to this site as well. It also covers several museums, the Old City walls, transportation, making it great value! I suggest going early to avoid large crowds and the heat, especially in summer. We arrived just 45 minutes after opening and there were no lines.

A hidden gem! I encountered very few visitors here. While walking along the shore, I stumbled upon this serene and peaceful place.
