Heart of Cape Town Museum

Overview

Nestled within the Groote Schuur Hospital, the Heart of Cape Town Museum offers an immersive journey into the history of one of the most significant medical milestones: the first human heart transplant. Established in 2007 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this groundbreaking operation performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the museum delves into the story of Louis Washkansky, the first recipient of the transplant. Visitors can explore the original operating theatre and other key areas of the hospital, witnessing reconstructions of pivotal moments such as the car accident of Denise Darvall, whose heart was transplanted, and the challenges faced during this pioneering procedure. The museum is not only a testament to medical achievement but also a place of reflection on ethical and medical practices that revolutionized surgery and transplant processes worldwide.

Very few people can say they have explored an operating theatre while fully awake. This realistic museum, featuring silicone wax dolls, is highly informative and highlights the significance of medical advancements and saving lives. It's definitely worth visiting, especially with an educational group like I did.

This museum is the best I have visited so far in Cape Town. It's definitely a must-see! The tour is extremely interesting, and the whole subject is very important and fascinating. The presentation with dolls, original operation rooms, and newspaper articles truly transports you back to 1967. I highly recommend it! 👍

What a fantastic tour! I didn't make a reservation but was able to walk in just before 9 on a Thursday. The guide provided us with a wealth of information and encouraged us to explore and photograph everything freely.
