The museum is truly worth a visit. It's quite large, and they have restored everything well. However, the staff seem to lack knowledge at times. During my visit, I was told to store my small backpack, while I noticed other visitors with larger backpacks were allowed in without issue. They seem to lack a consistent policy. Be sure to have a 100 forint or 1 Euro coin for the self-service cloakroom, as it's necessary and will be returned after use. Unfortunately, there isn't a place to change coins.
I had a fantastic experience visiting the museum on a Monday, a day when many other attractions are closed. I utilized my Buda Card for public transport and entry into the museum. It was an amazing and captivating experience! The English signage is excellent, and there are thousands of years of history to contemplate.
Even without a ticket, you can hike up the hill for stunning views. The museum is included in the Budapest Tourist pass, which also covers the National Gallery and Libraries, or you can pay separately. St. Stephen Hall is popular among tourists, but I preferred the exhibitions about the area's history. I found the geography and cultural influences quite interesting. Their collection includes artifacts from prehistory through to the present day. I believe it would be a great place for kids too, as there are educational games that even I, as an adult, enjoyed.
The castle in Budapest is enormous with a lot to explore, but the history museum was definitely worth my time. The value is exceptional for students. It's a huge museum featuring the beautiful St. Stephen’s room, which is worth the extra ticket cost. The coverage of the medieval history of the castle is also impressive. They have an entire wing dedicated to the timeline of Budapest's history. Overall, fantastic value.
The building is beautiful, and I only had time for the History Museum. I've noticed that many museums in the EU keep their lighting dim, making it hard to see details in the paintings and artifacts. This History Museum has many displays, but they felt somewhat unconnected as there wasn't a clear flow indicating the founding of Hungary and the significant events that shaped it. Overall, I appreciated the exterior more than the interior.
