Jerusalemkerk: A Historical Landmark in Bruges

Overview

The Jerusalemkerk, located in the heart of Bruges, is a remarkable church that draws inspiration from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Built in the 15th century, this architectural marvel was commissioned by Anselm Adornes, a wealthy merchant and diplomat who had returned from the Holy Land. The church features a striking tower and a unique altar adorned with imagery reflecting themes of mortality and spirituality. Visitors can explore the crypt's low vaulted ceilings and gain insight into the lives of the aristocratic Adornes family, who played a significant role in the city's history. The estate also includes a film about Knight Anselm Adornes and offers an exhibition showcasing the family's achievements. While at the church, enjoy refreshments at the charming Scottish Lounge, where an honor system provides a unique twist to your dining experience. Don't miss the chance to purchase tickets for your visit to the Jerusalemkerk at the nearby Lace Museum.

A remarkably captivating church and museum. Following a great recommendation for an evening walking tour, we returned the next morning. It's a stunning church, and the self-guided tour is very informative. Highly recommend visiting, and we’ll definitely be back.

A quiet haven just a short stroll from the bustling center. This estate has been family-owned for 17 generations and features a small museum, the Jerusalem chapel, and a lovely garden. It’s conveniently close to the lace museum, making it easy to visit both.

A beautiful family estate and private church, rich in history and well-maintained through generations. I've visited at least three times while in Bruges, even bringing my sister and her husband, who were also impressed. It's one of the quieter, lovely spots to see in town!

Very intriguing, especially with the interactive section of the museum where you can test your knowledge. I particularly enjoyed the Scottish lounge, where I could enjoy hot drinks after a windy day. I would recommend it; the chapel is a must-see in Bruges!

If our host is correct, this is the only privately owned church in Bruges, operated by the 17th generation of the original family who built it! We nearly overlooked it, but we are so pleased to have experienced this beautifully preserved site in a city rich in history.
