The Reichstag Building: A Historical Landmark in Berlin

Overview

The Reichstag Building, an iconic symbol of German democracy, was originally constructed in 1894 and has undergone several transformations since its inception. This architectural marvel features four wings, two courtyards, and an impressive main chamber. Following its destruction in a fire in 1933, the historic dome was lost, but the building was meticulously restored in 1961, solidifying its role as the meeting point for parliamentary committees. Visitors are greeted by majestic columns and a grand staircase leading to the main entrance. The reconstructed dome now serves as a popular observation point, offering visitors stunning panoramic views over the city and the famed Tiergarten. While entry to the building is free, advance registration through the official website is required to ensure a seamless visit.

A visit to the Reichstag Building is essential when in Berlin. We pre-booked tickets and only waited about 15 minutes to get through security. The facility provides free audio guides available in multiple languages. The dome offers a fantastic panoramic view of the city, although during our visit, the weather was quite cloudy, luckily the dome has a remarkable natural light system. Downstairs, there's an exhibition with images and historical explanations. This landmark is truly among the most beautiful in Berlin.

As highlighted by many, the Reichstag is a must-see for visitors to Berlin. I suggest this as the first (or second after the Brandenburg Gate) destination before exploring other attractions. We reserved our tickets in advance and thankfully received same-day entry. The dome visit included a free audio guide detailing the views and history of the main attractions in Berlin.
