Alte Nationalgalerie: A Jewel of 19th Century Art in Berlin

Overview

The Alte Nationalgalerie, known as the Old National Gallery, is a premier art destination located in Berlin, celebrated for its impressive collection of 19th-century artworks. Established in 1861, the gallery became a cultural landmark after a local banker gifted his extensive art collection to the King, prompting the construction of a purpose-built facility. The gallery forms part of the remarkable Museum Island in Berlin and is home to exceptional paintings including landscape masterpieces by Jakob Philipp Hackert and striking portraits by Anton Graff. Art enthusiasts can explore works by renowned creators like Gottlieb Schick, Philipp Otto Runge, as well as Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Edouard Manet, and Edgar Degas. Additionally, two dedicated rooms highlight exquisite jewels from the Romanticism era. Don’t miss the exciting weekend events that the museum hosts; be sure to check their website for the latest updates and activities before your visit.

The Alte Nationalgalerie features a variety of artworks from local German artists. While it may not appear large from the outside, you can explore it fairly quickly. It didn't leave a lasting impression on me. If you're deciding between several museums in Berlin, consider visiting others instead.

The museum showcases stunning works by various artists, including Menzel and French creators, which I enjoyed immensely. However, I encountered unpleasant service from the ticket clerk, particularly towards students, making me feel belittled. This was a unique issue I didn't face in any other Berlin museums. Improvement is needed.

This gallery is a must-visit! Avoid the ticket line and buy them through your phone at the lobby. Enjoy free coat and bag check, which is especially handy since it's warm inside. The staff are friendly and the exhibit features stunning pieces across many rooms. Don't forget to snap a photo of the horse from the first floor window; the steps outside only take you partway up.

Excellent experience! I suggest breaking your visit into two sessions of about 1.5 hours each. During your breaks, listen to stories about your favorite artists. Max Liebermann looks incredible alongside the works of Eduard and Claude Monet. Thank you for the wonderful service and organization.

This is one of the finest art galleries I've ever experienced. During my time in Berlin, I loved visiting the Alte Nationalgalerie. Unfortunately, the staff's attitude towards me often felt rude.
