Tiananmen Square: A Center of History in Beijing

Overview

Tiananmen Square, named after the Gate of Heavenly Peace, is one of the largest public squares in the world, spanning an impressive 440,500m². Located in the heart of Beijing, it is nestled between some of the city's most iconic landmarks, including the Forbidden City to the north and the Great Hall of the People to the west. Established in 1651 and significantly expanded over the years, the square can accommodate up to a million visitors. It holds great historical importance as the site of pivotal events such as the May 4th Movement in 1919 and the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st, 1949. The square is also known for the tragic 1989 protests. Visitors must pass through security to enter, where they can view the Monument to the People's Heroes and Mao Zedong Mausoleum among the lush tree-lined avenues.

An iconic site that is essential to include in your group tour. It can get quite crowded with various queue systems, but our guide expertly managed everything. Without their help, we would have been lost! Be aware of security checks as well. From here, you can visit Mao’s mausoleum, the Museum of Chinese History, or the Great Hall of the People. The square's significance lies more in its history than in its beauty; although it is large and surrounded by impressive buildings, it's fundamentally just a square. Ensure to book your visit online or have a guide do it for you, and don’t forget your passport.

Be sure to make a reservation before visiting this location. It’s free but required. If you have tickets for the Forbidden City, those will grant you access here as well. While you can't enter the large building, it's worth seeing from the outside and capturing some photos. You won’t need to spend too long here, but it’s definitely worth stopping by to appreciate it in person!

No trip to Beijing is complete without visiting Tiananmen Square. It’s a wonderful opportunity to absorb this historical landmark, which is highly secure and well-preserved. It’s crucial to book your entrance in advance, preferably with a guide. Instagram-worthy 💯%!

Tiananmen Square is one of the largest public squares worldwide, representing a crucial aspect of Chinese history and culture. Here are several reasons why it’s so fascinating: Historical significance, an entry point to the Forbidden City (the emperors' former palace), a center for political protests (notably the events of 1989), stunning architecture around the square, a hub for large gatherings during significant occasions like National Day, and it symbolizes modern China's prosperity and strength. However, keep in mind the political sensitivity surrounding the square due to the 1989 incident, and be prepared for enhanced security. Overall, it's a must-visit when in China.

Entry is highly regulated, and you must pass through a police checkpoint with a ticket. Beyond that, it’s simply a vast and iconic square. It’s worth a brief visit, but the adjacent Forbidden City is far more impressive, and you can purchase a ticket that includes both sites.
