The Badaling section of the Great Wall is among the most convenient to access from Beijing, which also means it's often busy and filled with shops selling souvenirs. However, if you're looking for a straightforward half-day trip, this is a great option. Near the entrance, there are flatter areas with stunning views perfect for photos before you hit some steeper parts. To reach the upper ramparts, set aside a full day, but for lower parts, visiting later in the afternoon can help avoid large crowds, particularly as it gets closer to closing time (5:00 PM in winter).
Pro Tip: Visiting in winter during the afternoon can provide a quieter experience and different scenic views as the landscape changes with the season.
While the entrance to the Great Wall can be very crowded, the experience is still worthwhile since you can take a bullet train right there, bypassing the need for a private driver. After navigating through the hustle and bustle, a short 15-minute walk can lead you to less crowded areas. This entrance features a toboggan slide, which is great fun for kids. Plan to stay for about 5 hours to fully enjoy the walking paths and take breaks.
Visiting one side of the Great Wall in Beijing was an incredible experience. This ancient site showcases the rich history of the Chinese dynasties. On my next visit, I look forward to exploring the other sections as well. This is truly a must-see when in Beijing.
I visited this section of the Great Wall as part of a tour and had a couple of hours to explore, which was sufficient. Certain areas are quite steep, and the steps vary in height. If you make it to the top, you can trek back down another section, which could take around 90 minutes; this route tends to be less crowded. You'll find amazing views, refreshments like coffee and beer nearby, as well as souvenirs and restrooms throughout.
Exploring the Badaling section of the Great Wall is an unforgettable experience. Renowned as one of the best-preserved and most famous parts of the wall, it offers a glimpse into China's rich history. The views are spectacular and reflect the impressive architecture of this ancient monument. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting China!
*Tips: To skip the crowds, arrive early and wear comfortable shoes to navigate the steep areas. Carry water and snacks as options are limited.
*Peak visiting times tend to be weekends and holidays; thus, weekdays or early mornings are ideal for a quieter visit.
