Fragrant Hills Park: A Wondrous Escape in Beijing

Overview

Fragrant Hills Park, nestled in the charming city of Beijing, was originally an imperial garden designed with serene beauty in mind. Spanning approximately 1.6 km², this park is home to around 120,000 majestic trees, several of which offer stunning fall foliage that attracts nature lovers year-round. Its name is derived from the unique shape of a hill, resembling an incense burner, which adds to the park's enchanting atmosphere. Visitors can explore well-preserved structures, including the ancient Temple of Azure Clouds, and take leisurely walks along routes that unveil the park's historical treasures such as lakes, traditional pagodas, and the picturesque Bright Temple. Fragrant Hills Park invites you to immerse yourself in its rich culture and enjoy breathtaking landscapes, making it a must-visit destination for anyone in Beijing.

This was my first hiking experience. In 2014, I went with my lab group. The climb was quite challenging, but my colleagues were very supportive, waiting patiently for me after every few steps. Although it took us longer, we finally reached the top to enjoy a breathtaking evening view of Beijing.

Autumn is stunning here, but if you plan to hike, be aware that it becomes slippery and hazardous during rain!

Fragrant Hills Park is a must-visit in Beijing! Although it's a bit distant from the city, the transport is quite accessible, albeit lengthy. After you disembark from the train, there is some walking to the main entrance (there are several). Be prepared for a lot of walking. The trek is not similar to mountains and hiking in Europe, as you'll be ascending thousands of stairs. Alternatively, you can take a cable car for an easier option. Regardless of how you ascend, the views from the top are fabulous. However, on smoggy days, visibility of the city can be poor.

A beautiful park featuring spectacular views of Beijing. However, avoid visiting on a sunny Saturday, as you will encounter long traffic jams and overwhelming crowds just to access the entrance. We opted to bike here, which I highly suggest, as parking is an issue. Explore the hills above the official park (entry through a gate is required, but there's no fee). A weekday visit is much more enjoyable and relaxed, but steer clear of national holidays for the same crowd-related issues prevalent on weekends.
