Discover the Wonders of Museu de Ciències Naturals de la Ciutadella in Barcelona
Overview
The Museu de Ciències Naturals de la Ciutadella is a treasure trove of natural history nestled in the heart of Barcelona. Located within the picturesque Parc de la Ciutadella, this museum encompasses multiple locations, including the Museum of Zoology and the Geological Museum. With a history spanning over 132 years, it boasts a staggering collection of more than 3 million specimens encompassing mineralogy, botany, paleontology, petrology, and zoology. While the Museum of Zoology is temporarily closed for renovations, it resides in an architecturally striking Modernista building, originally designed to host a café for the late 19th-century World's Fair. The whimsical design features medieval castle-inspired towers and elements that evoke the Mudejar architectural style. Inside, visitors will find enchanting displays of zoological specimens alongside indigenous flora. The Geological Museum, housed in a neo-classical structure, showcases Spain’s largest collection of geological specimens, including granites, radioactive rocks, and fossils. Although this museum is also on a brief hiatus as it prepares for the upcoming exhibition titled 'A not-so-natural history: The Public and Natural History, from Cabinets to Museums', the significance of both locations remains a must-visit for history and nature enthusiasts alike.
