Wat Traimit: Home of the Golden Buddha in Bangkok

Overview

Wat Traimit is a remarkable temple located in Bangkok, renowned for its iconic Golden Buddha statue. This stunning statue, which stands nearly 5 meters tall and weighs approximately 5.5 tons, is recognized as the largest solid gold Buddha in the world. Crafted around 700 years ago during the Sukhothai Dynasty, the Golden Buddha was originally hidden with layers of plaster to protect it from invaders. After centuries of obscurity, it became known once more when the plaster was accidentally damaged during transportation to a new temple in the 1950s. Today, visitors to Wat Traimit can marvel at this exquisite statue made of 83% pure gold and learn about the history of the statue and the vibrant Chinese community in Bangkok through various exhibits available at the Interpretive Center.

The largest golden Buddha statue is majestic and beautiful. While the temple itself may not take long to explore, it's definitely worth a visit when in Chinatown, Bangkok.

Wat Traimit, known as the Golden Buddha Temple, is an impressive temple situated in the large Chinatown of the Thai capital. The structure boasts marble with golden roofs and ornate designs. The admission fee is 100 Baht (approximately $3). To reach the impressive 5.5 tons golden Buddha, visitors need to ascend three flights of stairs, which may pose a challenge for some. The Buddha is truly spectacular - shiny and smooth unlike many others that are covered in gold leaves. While I find it hard to believe it is all solid gold, with such a significant amount displayed, visiting is still highly recommended.
