Wat Traimit: Home of the Golden Buddha in Bangkok
Overview
Wat Traimit is a remarkable temple located in Bangkok, renowned for its iconic Golden Buddha statue. This stunning statue, which stands nearly 5 meters tall and weighs approximately 5.5 tons, is recognized as the largest solid gold Buddha in the world. Crafted around 700 years ago during the Sukhothai Dynasty, the Golden Buddha was originally hidden with layers of plaster to protect it from invaders. After centuries of obscurity, it became known once more when the plaster was accidentally damaged during transportation to a new temple in the 1950s. Today, visitors to Wat Traimit can marvel at this exquisite statue made of 83% pure gold and learn about the history of the statue and the vibrant Chinese community in Bangkok through various exhibits available at the Interpretive Center.
