Wat Saket: The Majestic Golden Mount

Overview

Wat Saket, famously known as the Golden Mount, is a historic temple located in the heart of Bangkok. This iconic landmark boasts a striking 58-meter high golden chedi atop an artificial hill, providing breathtaking views of the city and Rattanakosin Island. Dating back to the Ayutthaya period, Wat Saket has undergone several restorations, most notably by King Rama I and River II during the early 19th century. Originally serving as a cremation site outside the city walls, the temple is a crucial part of Bangkok's cultural heritage. Climb the 318 steps to the summit where the majestic chedi holds a sacred Buddha relic, gifted by the British during the reign of King Rama V. If visiting in late October or early November, don't miss the vibrant Loy Kratong temple fair, celebrated with a candlelit procession, adding a festive charm to this already enchanting temple complex.

Wat Saket is the perfect spot to watch the sunset while listening to monks chanting—a truly peaceful experience. The climb up is lined with beautiful bells and Buddha statues, adding to the serene atmosphere. It can get crowded with tourists eager for the perfect sundown shot, but it's still worth the visit. I highly recommend reading the story of the vultures and the cholera epidemic to appreciate the temple’s deep history. A must-see in Bangkok!

A hidden or not as well known attraction which is brilliant. This is our second time and this is such a nice place to climb the stairs and see different views and levels. The temples and Buddhas are great and I love the cave temple at the end personally. It has so much going on around the mount too so has a buzzing atmosphere.

The entrance to the mountain costs 100 baht per tourist. There are 318 steps to the top. Somewhere in the middle of the way you can ring the bells, it’s believed that this way you attract good luck. The bells are quite loud and you need to be careful. There are also bells at the top, they are no less loud. In the temple you can buy water or just relax under the air conditioning, which was so necessary for me. The temple is quite beautiful, views from it open up in all directions and you can see the city.

Oh wow! Impressive sights at the temple, some of which embody true beauty. As per the default of humanity nowadays, there are some trinkets and plastic this and that around but also items, architecture, and creations of significant timeless style and vibe. In the evening, although not get to the top, you can walk and feel the peace encompassing this area. Recommended!

The best attraction in all of Bangkok. It's full of love and beauty on the way up, without kitsch, with the usual religious beauty of Thailand at the top and it's all topped off with the great 360 degrees view over the city. All for just 100 Baht (and the effort to climb all the stairs).
