Explore the Historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens

Overview

The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro, stands as a remarkable testament to ancient athletics and modern sporting events. Originally constructed between 330-321 BC to host the Panathenaic Games, this iconic stadium was dedicated to the goddess Athena and could accommodate around 50,000 spectators. The structure underwent significant renovations under Roman influence in 140 AD and was covered in beautiful white marble, a remarkable feature that still enchants visitors today. Although it fell into disrepair during the medieval period, the stadium was magnificently restored in the 19th century to serve as the venue for the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896. Now, it operates as a multi-purpose venue, hosting a variety of sporting events and concerts, while maintaining its historical design. The stadium holds a special place in history, reflecting Greece's rich athletic tradition and is featured on Greek currency, marking its significance in the nation's cultural heritage.

No tickets or reservations are needed to visit this historic site. However, if you want to take a guided tour, it's best to book in advance. There is also a traditional guard outside with whom you can pay to take a photo. This showcases the vast history of the structures in Athens. A quick stop for a photo is definitely worthwhile. I highly recommend visiting.

Athens is a city deeply rooted in history, and this stadium is a must-see when you are here. It is completely constructed from marble and hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The stairs to the top are quite steep, but reaching the summit is very rewarding. We visited in the hot summer of 2024, so make sure to bring water. There’s a small museum included with the ten euro ticket.

The Panathenaic Stadium is an awe-inspiring historical landmark and a must-visit in Athens. Being the only stadium entirely made of marble, it radiates a distinct elegance and timeless charm. Strolling through its stands and standing on the track where the modern Olympics kicked off in 1896 offers an unforgettable memory. The panoramic views from the upper seats are magnificent, making it an ideal location for both history buffs and sports fans.

This remarkable stadium was built in 400 BC and hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies of the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896. It was fantastic to explore, and there’s a little museum showcasing posters and torches from the games, along with a shop selling medals and souvenirs. I purchased the Japan and Rome ones; they were a bit pricey at 20 euros in February 2025, but well worth it! There are plenty of photo opportunities, including a podium, the Olympic symbol, tracks to run on, and the tunnel to experience like an athlete. Everything is included with your ticket, and there's a free audio guide available; I used my phone with an app instead. Expect to spend a couple of hours here for a full experience.
