No tickets or reservations are needed to visit this historic site. However, if you want to take a guided tour, it's best to book in advance. There is also a traditional guard outside with whom you can pay to take a photo. This showcases the vast history of the structures in Athens. A quick stop for a photo is definitely worthwhile. I highly recommend visiting.
Athens is a city deeply rooted in history, and this stadium is a must-see when you are here. It is completely constructed from marble and hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The stairs to the top are quite steep, but reaching the summit is very rewarding. We visited in the hot summer of 2024, so make sure to bring water. There’s a small museum included with the ten euro ticket.

Visiting this stadium is essential to experience the rich history and stand where legends once played. Make sure to get the audio guide included in your ticket; they do a fantastic job preserving the site so everyone can enjoy it.
The Panathenaic Stadium is an awe-inspiring historical landmark and a must-visit in Athens. Being the only stadium entirely made of marble, it radiates a distinct elegance and timeless charm. Strolling through its stands and standing on the track where the modern Olympics kicked off in 1896 offers an unforgettable memory. The panoramic views from the upper seats are magnificent, making it an ideal location for both history buffs and sports fans.
This remarkable stadium was built in 400 BC and hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies of the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896. It was fantastic to explore, and there’s a little museum showcasing posters and torches from the games, along with a shop selling medals and souvenirs. I purchased the Japan and Rome ones; they were a bit pricey at 20 euros in February 2025, but well worth it! There are plenty of photo opportunities, including a podium, the Olympic symbol, tracks to run on, and the tunnel to experience like an athlete. Everything is included with your ticket, and there's a free audio guide available; I used my phone with an app instead. Expect to spend a couple of hours here for a full experience.
